Totesport Review 2017 – Read our Bookmaker Rating in 5 Mins
Totesport, as its name implies, has roots in horse racing. It was founded In 1928 by the UK government as a horse racing betting provider in an attempt to combat the prevalence of illegal gambling. By using a pool, groups of people could circumvent illegal betting and be able to bet on horse races while also helping to contribute money towards supporting horse racing. Over time, Totesport (which was originally called Tote) added more services to its portfolio to include fixed bets along with their signature tote. In 2011, the British Government decided to sell The Tote to Betfred who now operate it from Gibraltar. Is Totesport safe? Most certainly. Totesport has the relevant licences from both the UK and Gibraltar. In this Totesport sportsbook review, we’re going to have a look at their fixed-odds and pool operations to award an openodds Totesport rating.
The result of the OpenOdds Totesport Review
After completing our Totesport sportsbook review, we’re impressed with the new developments that have come through on the site although it still has a way to go to be one of the Best UK betting sites. While Totesport is fantastic for those who bet heavily on horse racing, the lack of depth in the rest of its offering might put some people off. The two major plus points are the focus on horse racing and the huge amount of pools on offer. The matched bonus is only valid on losing bets, which might seem a waste to those of you who plan on winning. In addition, the website needs some work to be at the aesthetic level of Bet365 and Bwin. There are betting apps for both iOS and Android allowing you to access the fantastic selection of horse racing wherever you are. Following our extensive Totesport sportsbook review, our Totesport rating is 76 out of 100.
Totesport experiences: Lots on offer from the former government bookmaker
Most Totesport reviews agree that the strength of this bookie, unsurprisingly, lies in its horseracing offering. Here are some other highlights:
- Totepool offers a great selection for punters
- Risk free first bet with the new customer offer
- High maximum winnings across the sports
- Good range of lottery products to bet on
- Intuitive website design and clutter free pages
Totesport Detailed Operator Review and rating report.
We at OpenOdds strive to have the most objective comparison of sportsbooks possible. We use the same categories to evaluate all bookmakers, so that you can easily compare your options. In this section of the Totesport Review we will undertake a deep analysis of the following ten categories:
- Betting odds
- Customer service
- Sports covered
- In-play product
- Payment methods
- Other products
- Betting limits
1.) Bonuses: Risk free first bet up to £25
The Totesport Sports betting Bonus is a free bet on a losing bet of up to £25. That’s right. If your first bet after registering on Totesport loses, they will give you the stake back in the form of a free bet. This might give you impetus to make a riskier bet where you could make a great profit, knowing that a loss is effectively consequence-free. While Totepool is the biggest added-value component for Totesport, those bets do not qualify for the bonus. If you fund your account with Neteller, Paysafe, or Skrill, you will be ineligible for the bonus, so we recommend that you consider your payment methods carefully when registering. In addition, the free bet will expire after 7 days so you’ve got to act quickly once your first bet is settled. For more information about how this compares to other bonuses take a look at our review of the Best Free Bets Offers.
2.) Betting odds: Close to the major players
In terms of profit margin, the Totesport profit margin is comparable to many of the top sportsbooks in the UK. The overall profit margin for Totesport is 4.7%, compared to 4.6% for William Hill and 4.3% for Bet365. As for the major sports, Totesport’s profit margin for football is only 3% compared to 6.4% at Bet365. This means that Totesport are doing a good job of providing odds that are fair to the customer.
Since horseracing is the bread and butter of Totesport’s history, it’s no surprise that racing takes a very prominent place at the table. That’s why, on horseracing, Totesport has a Best Odds Guaranteed Offer. That means that if you place a bet on a horse and its starting price is higher than what you bet on, any winnings will be paid at that higher price. Check where Totesport stands in our betting odds comparison.
3.) Customer service: 24/7 with live chat and loads of other resources too
Customer service is a crucial component of the Totesport review as it is in all our provider reviews. In the case of Totesport, one of the positive points about their customer service is the fact that all channels are available 24/7, even the live chat. We believe this is a great sign, considering that live chat is becoming more and more of an imperative for online betting sites. The live chat section is available on the right side of every landing page on Totesport with a blue and green pair of chat bubbles highlighting it. Besides live chat, you can also phone Customer Service, on 0800 032 8188 in the UK and +44 (0) 1925 907520 if you’re on holiday, or send an email to email@example.com. There is a separate line for the Casino & Instant Games area of the provider, as well as the option to send enquires by post. However, with live chat available, we can’t imagine you’ll need to.
4.) User-friendliness: More utilitarian than anything
The Totesport website is functional and easy to navigate. One criticism that we have is that on arrival at the homepage you’re not greeted immediately by the betting on offer. You have to navigate to the ‘sports’ tab in order to see what markets are available. The colour scheme of predominantly black and green allows the main menus to stand out properly. The look is not as modern as many other providers, leaving us with the impression that this a rather bare bones version of what could be. Despite that, it’s easy to get to all the areas you need to bet successfully with the main categories on the top of the page, nice graphics to highlight the promotions, and the help panels being quickly accessible. The focus is clearly on racing, with that being the top menu on the left hand side. In the centre of the page you’ll find a selection of bets that are available in the next 3 hours or even within 15 minutes. The live betting selection is found on a separate tab and can be sorted by sport.
5.) Sports covered: The pickings are slim
All of the major sports are available on Totesport, so if you’re wondering why we’ve decided to claim that the pickings are slim, let’s put it into perspective. On the day of our research, we saw only 267 events across the entire sportsbook available on Totesport. There are some providers where you could see close to four or five times that. While we did find some more obscure fixtures in football, including from Gibraltar, French Amateur Championship, and the Mexican Youth League, we feel that Totesport needs to up its offering if it ever aims to be a hub for more than just horse racing. One of the plus points of Totesport is the pools offering. There are seven types of pools in the Totepool section, along with good explanations of how the format works.
6.) In-play product: A good selection but no live stream
When you go the In Play section on Totesport, you’ll see the relevant events and the updated odds. The events available can be filtered by sport, or you can view them all at once. Since there’s no video live stream available, Totesport provide information on where a specific fixture is being shown, like the Real Betis-Osasuna match on Sky Sports 5. While there is no video live stream, they do make live commentary available for certain sports. These are horse racing, greyhounds and football. Within some of the sports, you can find a nice variety of in-play betting. For example, in basketball there was the NCAA tournament from US universities, the Lithuanian Basketball League, the Israel Super League, and the Turkey BSL. Overall, the in-play product is impressive considering the limited range of sports on the site itself, however it isn’t up there with the best of the best UK betting sites.
7.) Payment methods: The biggest players are covered
The following payment methods are accepted at Totesport: Visa, Maestro, MasterCard, Visa Electron, Neteller, Skrill, and Paysafecard. One frustrating part of the Totesports payment methods policy is that the information regarding deposit and withdrawal is not easily available in the FAQ area. This information is readily available on most other online sportsbooks including comprehensive information regarding the minimums and maximums for each payment method and the processing times. Remember that Neteller, Skrill, and Paysafecard deposits are ineligible for the New Customer Offer, so if that is your preferred payment method you may wish to make your initial deposit using an alternative before you switch.
8.)Other products: Many of the typical products on hand
In this section of the Totesport Review, we see that Totesport has a comprehensive offer, slightly making up for the lack of depth in the sports area. The ‘Games’ tab at the top of the page will lead you to what’s on offer. There’s a small selection of instant casino games, and they will tell you which games are also available on mobile. Unfortunately there’s currently no live casino on offer, however that isn’t exactly a surprise, so we can’t take off too many points for that! In addition, there’s also a section for Lotto which gives you the power to bet on the lottery instead of migrating to a site like The Lotter or Lottoland. The Lottery selection available is: Irish Lotto, 49s, Daily Million, Spanish, New York, Greek, German, and Canadian. If you’re inclined to play the lotto, there is a £25 matched bet on the Lotto section, which is a good bonus for that sector. Given that the primary focus of Totesport is its vast selection of pools for horseracing it still has a long way to go before it gets top marks in this category.
9.) Security: IBAS Member
Is Totesport safe? We certainly think so. Totesport uses SSL encryption software and is protected by Trustwave’s Trusted Commerce Programme. This security encryption gives every user the comfort of knowing that their details are safe. Every online bookmaker operating in the UK is required to have the appropriate licences from the UK Gambling Commission as well as in the locations where the corporate owners of the providers are registered. In the case of Totesport, since it is operated by Gibraltar-based Petfre Limited, it has the proper licences in both Gibraltar and in the UK. The corporate registration number in Gibraltar for Petfre Limited is 93314. Totesport is also a member of the IBAS, ensuring that play is fair and secure for all.
Besides the ubiquitous link to GamCare that is at the footer to just about every online bookmaker and gambling site operating in the United Kingdom, there are lots of tools made available to Totesport users to make sure that they’re playing safely and responsibly. These include: setting your own betting limits (daily, weekly or monthly); a gambling self-assessment that you can use to gauge whether your gaming behaviour is responsible; time out periods; reality checks; and of course, self-exclusion periods.
10.) Betting limits: High maximum winnings
In terms of the limits at totesport these can be easily found by navigating to the terms and conditions via the footer of the website. There is a high upper limit of £1,000,000 on bets for horse racing and football, which should be enough to keep the high rollers happy. The limits vary from sport to sport but generally we think they are generous. Golf has a maximum of £500,000 while other sports such as rugby and boxing max out at £100,000. Make sure you consult the limits before placing your bets, as you wouldn’t want to place a stake you can’t collect on. As is standard in the industry, all multiple bets will be subject to the lowest maximum of the individual bets.
Conclusion: Totesport reviews love the racing product
Our Totesport Review has left us with the conclusion that Totesport is really suited to aficionados of horseracing and tote pools. Those are the two major products, and while there are other sports, the depth and breadth may not be enough to keep punters who crave a wider variety satisfied. That being said, the in-play betting selection is solid, and there is a good range of other products on offer to keep your interest. Overall we recommend Totesport to those of you who like to focus on the horses, but want a slightly better selection of other products than at sites like Racebets.
