With Bournemouth just about maintaining expectations – in their now default position in the middle of the Premier League table – while Wolves are exceeding theirs, it may seem as though all the momentum is going one way. However, Bournemouth’s usual standard can be extremely good. Just look at the hammering they gave Chelsea last month before you underestimate them.
Still, as we can see from their failure to capitalise on that momentum against Cardiff and Liverpool, what Wolves have and Bournemouth lacks is consistency. The recently promoted team have fired many more hits than misses, with recent victories over Leicester, West Ham and Everton. So far, the rise of the Wolves to the top tier of English football has been a bit of a fairytale. Does Bournemouth have what it takes to bring them back to reality?
AFC Bournemouth vs Wolverhampton Wanderers Prediction: Bournemouth 1-2 Wolves
This all comes down to consistency, which is what separates Wolves from Bournemouth in both the standings and in our prediction. Picking a winner often depends on how well each team plays on the day. So, in order to make a prediction, you need to look at each side’s form in general and consider what is likely based on those observations.
We see a home side that has the potential to win here, but one that all too rarely manages to capitalise on that potential. Still, there should be plenty of give-and-take, so we’re predicting a 2-1 final scoreline to Wolves.
Our recommended tip: Wolverhampton Wanderers win
This is definitely expected to be a close matchup. After all, Wolverhampton Wanderers sit only four positions and six points ahead of their opponents in the Premier League standings. The stats do give the slightest of advantages to the away side though, with Wolve’s 37% win probability just inching ahead of Bournemouth’s 34% win probability. Although William Hill do give Bournemouth good low-risk match odds of 9/5, we recommend that you back the favourites to victory to get slightly safer 8/5 odds on a Wolves win.
The history between these two is very limited, with only a trio of recent matches worth looking at. From those results, you could make an argument that they represent an advantage for either side.
The teams most recently met last December, when Wolves took home a 2-0 victory. They won’t have the home advantage here, but that’s still a big psychological edge. However, they failed to win in both 2015 and 2014 in the Championship, where Bournemouth picked up back-to-back 2-1 wins.
The only wisdom we’re getting from their recent history is what we already know: there’s not much between them.
Top 3 Premier League Bookies
Players to watch: Joshua King & Raúl Jiménez
AFC Bournemouth: Joshua King
Injuries have severely hampered Bournemouth’s goalscoring abilities, with both Callum Wilson and David Brooks looking extremely likely to miss this game. With that in mind, we’ll have to look elsewhere for goalscorers – and Joshua King, alongside Ryan Fraser, are the obvious choices. You could make a decent argument for either, but with King being such a vital part of that astonishing win over Chelsea, that gives him the edge in players to watch.
Wolverhampton Wanderers: Raúl Jiménez
The story of Wolves for the last couple of years has been one of surprise and defying expectations, and no one encapsulates that spirit as well as Raúl Jiménez. He has made such an impact since joining the side last June, on loan from Benfica, that he now feels part of the fabric of the club. On top of that, there’s rarely a Premier League Wolves victory which their top goalscorer doesn’t have a hand in creating. We doubt things will be different here.
