Arsenal vs Leicester City – Betting Tips & Predictions – 22-10

Last updated & checked: 10/08/2021

Arsenal, with nine wins in nine games across all competitions, are very much the form team in the Premier League, and while some may argue that this winning streak has come against mostly lower-quality opposition, you can only beat what’s put in front of you. Leicester, for their part, come into this game off the back of a defeat at home by Everton, and have looked extremely mid-table over their first eight games. They don’t look like the team to knock Arsenal off their current invincible run.

With the Gunners facing a pivotal trip to Lisbon in the Europa League on Thursday night, Claude Puel’s men will hope to find an opponent with their mind on another place, but all things being equal it’s the London side who come into this game holding all the cards.

Arsenal vs Leicester City Prediction: Arsenal 3-2 Leicester City

Since the arrival of Unai Emery to replace Arsenal legend Arsene Wenger in the dugout, the most noticeable change in the Gunners’ approach is a more solid mentality. In truth, though, Rome wasn’t built in a day and despite a more encouraging defensive record, the tendency to concede cheaply won’t be entirely gone for a few months yet. However, blessed with two of the Premier League’s best strikers, Emery’s men still seem to have enough firepower to cope with any hare-brained moments at the back. While we’d expect Jamie Vardy and his talented supporting cast to give the hosts a fright, the likely result in this game is a high-scoring Arsenal win.

Our recommended tip: Harry Maguire carded

Solid at the back, a threat from set pieces and perhaps England’s surprise hero of the 2018 World Cup campaign, Harry Maguire has made the £17million spent by Leicester to secure his signature look like a bargain. His commitment to keeping a clean sheet means he’s uncompromising in the challenge, which does bring us to the one drawback in his game. Maguire has been booked three times this season thanks to his rough-and-tumble approach. At 2/1 (3.00) with Coral to be carded on their #YourCall market, Maguire is once again exceptionally good value.

Previous matches

Leicester’s last visit to the Emirates came on the opening day of the 2017/18 season and, as is becoming traditional, the Foxes conceded an early goal to kick off the campaign. Behind after two minutes to an Alexandre Lacazette goal, the visitors fought back through Okazaki and Vardy, before Danny Welbeck’s finish send the sides in level at two goals each.

Another Vardy goal put the visitors back in front, but Arsenal dug deep in the last ten minutes to find goals from Aaron Ramsey and Olivier Giroud for a 4-3 win. Leicester did gain a measure of revenge later in the season with a 3-1 home win, but they’ll have their work cut out to get even a point here.

Players to watch: Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang & Nampalys Mendy

The reason that Aubameyang is at Arsenal at all may raise a concern for Gunners fans – a total breakdown in relations with his previous club, Dortmund, which saw the player sit out games. Since his arrival in North London, however, he’s seemed happy, committed and, most importantly, every bit as much of a game-winner as he was in the good times in Germany. In tandem with the brilliant Lacazette, his goals could fire an Arsenal revival everyone expected to take a lot longer than this one season.

Upon NGolo Kante’s departure in 2016, Mendy was signed from Nice to fill the (not inconsiderable) gap left by his fellow Frenchman. Over the course of his first two seasons, he played four league games for the Foxes, and seemed set to depart with little fanfare. However, since being brought back into the fold by Puel, Mendy has shown that he’s a no-nonsense defensive midfielder who tackles, intercepts and frees his team-mates up to do the exciting stuff. Not at Kante’s level, perhaps, but a very fine tribute act.
