Cardiff City welcome Chelsea to South Wales on Sunday afternoon, with the Bluebirds looking to build on their 2-0 home win over West Ham United last weekend. City will want to show some of the strong home form that they have demonstrated in patches this season, having taken 20 out of their 28 Premier League points on home soil in 2018/19.
Chelsea find themselves down in sixth place in the Premier League table, and head into this game on the back of a 2-0 defeat away at Everton last weekend. Maurizio Sarri’s team have failed to win in their last two league games, with them being held to a 1-1 draw by Wolverhampton Wanderers in their last home game.
Cardiff City vs Chelsea Prediction: Bluebirds 1-1 Blues
Our prediction for the outcome of this game is that it will end in a 1-1 draw. Cardiff win most of their points at home, and Chelsea have not been in great form in recent weeks. It looks as though the west London side’s chances of reaching the top four places of the Premier League are sliding away, and morale is seeping away too. Sarri is unlikely to be the Chelsea manager next season, with reports linking him with a move to Roma. It is hard to motivate players when they all know you are on your way out.
Our recommended tip: Draw, 1X2
Our featured tip for this game comes from William Hill, who are offering odds of 17/5 on the 1X2 market for the game ending as a draw. This bet matches our prediction that the game will finish 1-1, but also gives you a little bit of flexibility when it comes to the precise final scoreline. Cardiff will have taken heart from last week’s victory over West Ham, and will want to repeat the win over another London side. We suspect that Chelsea will be too strong for the home side to win, but a score draw is definitely on the cards.
There have been only three Premier League games between these sides, and Chelsea have won all three encounters. Two of those games have been at Stamford Bridge, and one at the Cardiff city Stadium. The last time the two sides met in Cardiff was in May 2014, when Chelsea won 2-1, thanks to goals from Andre Schurrle and Fernando Torres. Cardiff’s goal that day was an own goal.
Both encounters at Stamford Bridge have ended in 4-1 victories for the Londoners. Earlier this season, Eden Hazard scored a hat-trick and Willian scored one in the meeting at Stamford Bridge.

Players to watch: Victor Camarasa & Gonzalo Higuain
Cardiff’s Spanish midfielder Victor Camarasa scored his team’s second goal in their victory at West Ham last weekend. He is the Bluebirds’ joint top scorer in the Premier League in 2018/19, having scored four goals in 25 league appearances. He has also provided his team-mates with three assists. The 24-year-old has crossed the ball 107 times with an accuracy rate of 34%, and has played 35 accurate long balls this season.
Gonzalo Higuain has a good record against teams lying in the relegation zone. Since signing for the Blues in January on loan from Juventus, the Argentine has netted three goals in seven Premier League games. Those goals have come against Huddersfield Town, against whom he scored two, and Fulham. He has also hit the woodwork once, and has missed two big chances. Eight of his 28 attempts on goal have been on target.
