They might be what seems like worlds apart in Group D of the Euro 2020 qualifiers. Georgia are keeping their heads above water – partly thanks to the disastrous run by Gibraltar in fourth place – while the Republic of Ireland sit undefeated at the top of the group. However, we think there’s less between these two in terms of ability than the results would suggest.
There’s no better example of that than their last match, which the Republic of Ireland won – but only just. And if you consider that 1-0 was the result in a game on the Irish side’s home turf, then the possibility of a draw or even an upset victory here doesn’t seem especially farfetched.
Nonetheless, we think what does separate them is that difference in consistency. The Republic of Ireland have scratched, clawed and played their way to an inspiring run thus far, while Georgia have consistently come up short – at least, for the most part.
Georgia vs Republic of Ireland Prediction: Georgia 1-1 Republic of Ireland
One factor that really made us come to our scoreline prediction is that Georgia have had issues but they have clearly tried to improve on a match-by-match basis. Losses don’t always mean bad performances. Just look at how they bounced back from a 5-1 loss to Denmark to grind them down to a draw in the rematch. We think we’ll see something similar here. Georgia have the will to push the Republic of Ireland to the limit, while the group leaders may lack the motivation to ignite the fire needed to win this one. With that in mind, our scoreline prediction is a 1-1 draw.
Our recommended tip: Valeri Qazaishvili scores first
One option that seems to have gone under the radar for a lot of bookmakers is Valeri Qazaishvili to be the first player to score, with few carrying the bet. This is a surprise because he seems to be a pretty obvious pick to us, considering this is a home game and the midfielder has scored four goals across their previous seven home victories – all in the first half. On the plus side, this oversight by the bookmakers means you can get what we consider to be pretty generous 7/1 odds from BetVictor.
You may be surprised to learn that these two have actually squared off a decent amount of times since the turn of the millenium, with 10 meetings between them overall. Unfortunately for the home team, history has not been kind to them. Georgia has lost all but one of those matches, which went to a 1-1 draw in 2017 – the same scoreline we are predicting here. Just as important to note though is that the Republic of Ireland have only won by a single goal in their last five meetings, meaning that more than anything else, this is likely to be a close one.

Players to watch: Valeri Qazaishvili & Conor Hourihane
Georgia: Valeri Qazaishvili
Considering we are predicting only one goal from Georgia in this game and we think that the most likely candidate behind that shot is Valeri Qazaishvili, we could hardly go with anyone else. We were very surprised though at just how much the bookmakers have underestimated this player in their odds. If the Republic of Ireland happen to make the same mistake, there’s a good chance they will be in for a rude awakening.
Republic Of Ireland: Conor Hourihane
On the other side of the field, there’s Conor Hourihane. He’ a man that Georgia are very unlikely to overlook, considering he scored the winning goal last time these two faced off. So, while there might not be an element of surprise here, we’re sure that Georgia will be doing everything to prepare for the Irish midfielder. His quality on the pitch is something that they may not be able to overcome.
