Relegated Huddersfield Town will attempt to avoid a seventh consecutive Premier League defeat this weekend when they welcome FA Cup finalists Watford to West Yorkshire. Watford are aiming for the European qualification places in the Premier League this season, and will be heading north in search of their second win in three league games.
We could see goals in this game, as Huddersfield have scored in all 14 of their previous home matches against the Hornets in all competitions, scoring 24 goals in total. For the Terriers, some additional motivation is provided by the fact that they are looking to avoid matching Sunderland’s unwanted record of 14 home defeats in a Premier League season.
Watford’s away form will need to improve if they want to get something from the game. The Hornets have lost their last three away games in the league.
Huddersfield Town v Watford Prediction: Terriers 0-1 Hornets
Our prediction for this game is that the away team will win 1-0, condemning Huddersfield to their seventh consecutive league defeat. Watford may have half an eye on the FA Cup final, which might affect their performance somewhat. We suspect, though, that the prospect of securing European qualification for the first time since the 1983/84 season, when Graham Taylor managed the club in a golden era for them, will provide the motivation the Hornets need for victory. It will be a close game, though, and it may be settled by an error rather than a moment of skill.
Our recommended tip: Watford 1-0
Our featured tip for this game comes from Betway, who are offering odds of 13/2 on our prediction of a 1-0 win for the Hornets turning out to be accurate. Those odds look pretty long to us, which gives you good value as a punter. We suspect that Watford will have just too much for a tired Huddersfield Town team that has literally nothing left to play for beyond pride. A hornets victory by a single goal looks the most likely outcome for us, and Huddersfield have struggled to score goals all season, home and away.
These two sides have met on just three previous occasions in the Premier League. Huddersfield have won two of those games and Watford one. The Terriers won both league matches last season, triumphing 4-1 at Vicarage Road and 1-0 at the John Smith’s Stadium.
Earlier this season, it was the Hornets who came out on top at Vicarage Road on October 27. They won 3-0, thanks to goals from Roberto Pereya, who scored in the 10th minute, Gerard Deulofeu, who netted in the 19th, and Isaac Success who scored with 10 minutes of the game remaining.

Players to watch: Aaron Mooy & Gerard Deulofeu
Australian midfielder Aaron Mooy is Huddersfield’s joint top scorer in the league this season, with just three Premier League goals to his name. Whether the 28-year-old will still be at Town next season remains to be seen, given the Terriers’ relegation. One of his goals has come from the penalty spot and one from a free kick, so Mooy offers threat in deadball situations. He has also made 57 tackles at a success rate of 57%.
Gerard Deulofeu is a key part of Watford’s attack, having been directly involved in 14 goals in all competitions this season. He has scored nine goals and provided five assists to his team-mates. He has an average of one goal involvement every 129 minutes, which is the best ratio of any other Hornets player. Seven of his goals have come in the 25 Premier League appearances he has made, and all seven have been scored with his right foot.
