Inter Milan are back in the Champions League for the first time since the 2011/12 season and they kick-off their campaign at the San Siro against Tottenham Hotspur. It promises to be a thrilling encounter between two sides who know that this game could be crucial in terms of progressing from the group given that Barcelona are expected to top Group B.
The Italian outfit have endured an extremely disappointing to life in Serie A, with Luciano Spaletti’s men picking up four points from just four games, whilst they lost 1-0 at home to newly-promoted Parma last time out. It means even at this early stage a title push looks a long shot, with Juventus boasting an eight-point cushion over Inter.
However, they face a Spurs side that are in a poor run of form themselves. They head to Italy on the back of successive defeats, away to Watford and at home to Liverpool and the manner in which they lost to the Reds on Saturday will have concerned Mauricio Pochettino. Therefore, both sides head into this clash needing a morale-boosting win.
Inter Milan vs Tottenham Hotspur Prediction: Inter Milan 1-1 Tottenham Hotspur
Despite their awful start to the season, there’s no doubt that Inter have a quality squad, with Spaletti bringing in some excellent players. On paper, they appear strong defensively, have power and creativity in midfield and one of the most deadly forwards in the world in Mauro Icardi. Yet, Spurs have real quality themselves and a prolific striker too, in Harry Kane. They have slightly more experience than Inter on the biggest stage and playing at such grand venues isn’t as daunting for the Spurs players as it once was. Given that, we expect a tight game, with little to choose between the sides and a score draw could be the outcome.

Given the quality both sides possess in the final third, with Ivan Perisic, Radja Nainggolan and Icardi on one side and Heung-min Son, Lucas Moura and Kane on the other, it’s natural to expect goals. As well as that, both sides look to dominate the ball and play on the front foot, whilst they’re capable of countering at speed too. Ultimately, it looks like a very good game between two evenly matched sides and we think both have more than enough about them to score at the San Siro.
These sides will be meeting for the fifth time when they play tonight and it’s fair to say there have been a few thrillers over the years.
Many will remember the time Gareth Bale almost single-handedly destroyed the Italians and right-back Maicon in particular. The Welshman hit a hat-trick in a 4-3 defeat at the San Siro, before Spurs won 3-1 in the Champions League group game at White Hart Line. Three years later the sides would meet in a Europa League clash and despite winning 3-0 at home, Spurs would trail 3-0 in Italy which took the game to extra-time. A crucial away goal from Emmanuel Adebyayor sent the Londoners through but it was a nervy ending with Inter winning 4-1 on the night.

Players to watch: Mauro Icardi & Harry Kane
The game could be decided by fine margins and taking your chances and there will be two prolific goalscorers on the pitch. For the hosts, Icardi has proven himself in Italian football over the years and is Inter’s talisman. He has great movement, is sharp and his finishing is fantastic. Spurs will look to stop the striker but many have tried over the years and they’ve failed.
Similarly, Inter’s chances of success could depend on how they deal with England’s main man. Harry Kane is coming under serious scrutiny for his recent performances and he was anonymous in the game against Liverpool. Critics are questioning his fitness and the striker does look tired after years of non-stop football. Yet, nobody at Inter will be writing off the Spurs striker. Like Icardi, Kane has proven himself over the years domestically and he’s also been crucial in some memorable European nights for Spurs.
