LA’s two footballing giants go at it in the MLS clash which sees the mighty LA Galaxy hampered by dwindling results. They still remain in a respectable third place in the Western Conference, but their seesaw performances have made them one of the most unpredictable teams in the league. Even their home form – which was generally viewed as being the bedrock of the side’s success – has begun to unravel, with four of their last five losses coming on their own turf.
Their opponents, by contrast, appear to be running away with it this year. Two places in the standings may be all that separates these teams but in reality, that reflects a hefty gulf of 10 points overall. Galaxy still have the potential to win this – and indeed any game this season – but their inability to get the job done when it counts as of late have made Los Angeles FC the favourites for most commenters.
LA Galaxy vs Los Angeles FC Prediction: LA Galaxy 1-2 LAFC
While it can be a little dull to agree with the consensus, we can’t poke many holes in the logic of the bookmakers here. Galaxy, of course, are capable of winning here, but their results over this season speak for themselves. Los Angeles FC have simply been more consistent over many months now. This makes their victory the most likely outcome, although not by a huge amount – we’re expecting a tough battle for each. In terms of a scoreline, Los Angeles FC may be winning but they haven’t done so with a clean sheet in MLS since May. So, we’re going with a 2-1 final result.
Our recommended tip: Los Angeles FC win
There are so many potential goalscorers in this match – even though some are clearly more deadly than others – that we think betting on a straightforward victory for either team is a good choice. If you think, like us, that Los Angeles FC are going to take home the win, then you can find low-risk 3/4 odds at SkyBet and elsewhere. Meanwhile, the likes of Unibet are offering 14/5 odds for Galaxy to overcome their underdog status with an upset. Each has a solid chance, although considering our predicted scoreline, we recommend you back the favourites here.
We said we thought this would be a close encounter and the trilogy of matches between these two sides from 2018 certainly backs up that theory. Only one came to a decisive victory in March, while their July and August clashes finished 2-2 and 1-1 respectively. The March match actually went LA Galaxy’s way, ending 4-3 in their favour. The tightness of these results helped us come to the conclusion that there would likely only be one goal difference in the end result. Meanwhile, Los Angeles FC’s improvements in form allowed us to give them the nod. Still, this is an advantage for Galaxy.

Players to watch: Zlatan Ibrahimović & Carlos Vela
LA Galaxy: Zlatan Ibrahimović
Throughout LA Galaxy’s uneven season, footballing veteran Zlatan Ibrahimović has been vital in keeping a level of consistency they so desperately need. For that reason alone, he has got to be one of the biggest threats that Los Angeles FC are facing in this game. And that’s without mentioning his incredible mix of technique and creativity which has made him Galaxy’s best scoring player this season at the age of 37.
Los Angeles FC: Carlos Vela
It’s probably not surprising we have Carlos Vela as our one to watch considering his success rate. In 19 appearances, he’s managed to score in 15 of them. That means the chances of him doing so again here are excellent. Not only that, but we’re also pretty sure he’s the one LA Galaxy will have their eye on as well. Vela hit the back of the net in every one of their 2018 contests – something Galaxy will not have forgotten.
