Liverpool welcome Bayern Munich to Anfield on Tuesday evening for what should be a classic Champions League occasion. While the Reds are very much involved in the Premier League title race, Bayern are not the force that they have been in recent seasons. That does not mean that Jurgen Klopp’s Merseysiders can take the German side lightly, though. Bayern are currently second in the Bundesliga, two points behind leaders Borussia Dortmund with a game in hand. They still have plenty of threats all over the pitch, and Liverpool will need to be at their best to get a positive result from the game.
Bayern have won their last three league matches, while Liverpool have drawn two of their last three. Bayern will be without Thomas Muller for the game, as he is suspended for both legs.
Liverpool vs Bayern Munich Prediction: Reds 2-1 Bayern
Our prediction for this game is that the home side will win a thrilling contest 2-1. This looks like being a very entertaining game for spectators, with plenty of attacking talent on show. We suspect that Liverpool will start very strongly, and will sweep into an early 2-0 goal lead. Bayern will then begin a fightback which will see them score, but not be able to overhaul Klopp’s Reds. The Merseysiders will take a valuable lead to Munich for the second leg, but will regret conceding an away goal to Niko Kovac’s team.
Our recommended tip: Liverpool, both score
Our featured tip for this match comes courtesy of Coral, who are offering odds of 12/5 on Liverpool to win and both teams to score. This seems a good tip to us as it matches our prediction of a 2-1 victory for the Reds, whilst also giving you plenty of flexibility when it comes to the actual final scoreline. Liverpool have a habit of conceding goals even when they win, and we suspect that Bayern will put the Reds under some real pressure at times on Tuesday evening, though they will not be able to beat them in the end.
These two sides have faced each other on seven previous occasions in competitive fixtures. Their first meeting was in the Fairs Cup back in 1971, when Liverpool won a two-legged tie 4-1 on aggregate. Their last meeting in the European Cup, the forerunner of the Champions League, was back in 1981, when Liverpool won on away goals after a two-legged tie was drawn 1-1 on aggregate. In 2001, the two sides met in the European Super Cup, with Liverpool winning 3-2 in Monaco. John Arne Riise, Emil Heskey and Michael Owen scored the Reds’ goals that day.

Players to watch: Mohamed Salah & Robert Lewandowski
Forward Mohamed Salah is Liverpool’s top scorer in the Champions League this season, having netted three times in six games in the group stages of the competition. He has also weighed in with 17 goals and seven assists in the Premier League, highlighting his importance to his team. A genuine world star of football, Salah will surely be one of the Reds players that Bayern will be keeping a close eye on.
Striker Robert Lewandowski will lead the line for Bayern at Anfield on Tuesday evening, and will be an important player, given that Munich will be without several other key attacking players, with Muller suspended and Kingsley Coman struggling with injury. He has provided 13 goals and seven assists in the Bundesliga for Munich this season, and has also scored eight goals in six games in the group stages of this season’s Champions League.
