Netherlands vs France – Betting Tips & Predictions – 16/11

Last updated & checked: 10/08/2021

The Dutch – who somehow remain in the “top” tier of European footballing nations despite swinging and missing at qualification for two major tournaments in a row – welcome World Champions France to Rotterdam. Needing to win to retain any hope of a place in the knockout play-off, and direct qualification for Euro 2020 into the bargain, Ronald Koeman’s Oranje face a very testing evening. A win would be a significant step on the road back to international footballing relevance.

For France, the group can be settled tonight in their favour with a win or a draw. It’s their final game at this stage of the tournament, while their opponents have to prepare for a tough assignment in Germany early next week, and les Bleus have barely missed a beat since lifting the Henri Delaunay trophy in Moscow last summer. They’ve brought a genuinely strong squad to Rotterdam, and it contains goal threats in large number.

Netherlands vs France Prediction: Netherlands 1-2 France

France are certainly the best national team in the world. There’s an argument that you could say that even had they not won the sport’s biggest trophy less than six months ago, such is the obvious strength of their squad. A side that can – in fact, must – leave one of Ousmane Dembele, Olivier Giroud, Kylian Mbappe or Antoine Griezmann on the bench is one that’s spoilt for choice. That said, they rarely blow opponents away, usually opting for a more controlled tempo. This will be enough to see them to victory in this game, although we expect the Dutch to give it a real go.

Our recommended tip: Netherlands Score Once

It should be remembered that not only did the Dutch fail to qualify for the World Cup, they in fact finished third in a group featuring their opponents tonight as well as a mediocre Sweden team. The road back to being that all-conquering total football side is a long one, and getting anything from this game would be a decent staging post. For what it’s worth, they’ve always got players who can do some damage going forward, and we’d expect them to land a blow on France this evening. Not enough to win, but they’re worth backing to score at 6/4 (2.50) with Ladbrokes.

Previous matches

The most recent meeting of these sides came just a couple of months ago in this competition, at the Stade de France. On the night, France took the points but it wasn’t without a struggle. The hosts went ahead on 14 minutes through the ever-dangerous Mbappe, but a Ryan Babel goal on 67 threatened to split the points. It fell to Giroud – valued more at international level than at his club, Chelsea, it seems – to notch the winner from Benjamin Mendy’s pass with just a quarter of an hour left.

It was certainly a better result than on their previous visit to Paris in 2017’s World Cup qualifier, when two Thomas Lemar goals inspired a thumping 4-0 win for the eventual tournament winners.

Players to watch: Memphis Depay & Kylian Mbappe

Depay was once thought of in the same vein as Mbappe – a thrilling youngster who had an excellent World Cup in 2014, he won a move to Manchester United off the back of it. Things didn’t go so well in England and he’s ended up playing his club football at Lyon – he’ll see a few of his teammates on the opposite side this evening. At Lyon, he’s been a sensation, scoring more goals than any other player in Ligue 1 last season, and dovetailing excellently with his club’s other thrilling young attackers.

Drawing comparisons with former Brazilian legend Ronaldo, Mbappe has made the transition from Monaco youngster to World Cup-winning striker look easy. Still only 19, if the young Parisian can keep developing at anything like his present rate, he’ll be a terrifying proposition for years to come – although he might need to leave a PSG side that seems to have reached its ceiling in terms of achievement if he’s to join the pantheon of legends.
