The newly promoted Sheffield United have a lot to be proud of so far this season, adapting remarkably well. Based on their most recent 2-0 victory over Everton, they only seem to be improving as the season goes on.
All that being said, they are facing what is very likely to be their greatest test yet. They are going up against current Premier League leaders, last season’s runners-up and the so far undefeated Liverpool. Not only that but their performances so far, at this early point in the season, have been every bit as impressive as the results. However, both of these teams have shown us plenty at this early stage.
Nonetheless, the latter has been performing at a higher level, even if weaknesses outside of the Premier League against international teams have shown that the mountain Sheffield United have to climb is not unachievable.
Sheffield United vs Liverpool Prediction: Sheffield United 1-2 Liverpool
We don’t imagine many people will be making the argument that Sheffield United are the most likely winners here, despite all the positives we can take away from their season thus far. That is more of an indication of Liverpool’s strengths, rather than their weakness though. Nonetheless, Sheffield United have proven themselves nothing if not resilient, as we saw in their 2-2 draw against Chelsea. We think Liverpool will still manage to get the win here. They are talented and hugely motivated to keep their winning streak, but we predict they will have a tough time doing so, meaning our scoreline prediction is 2-1 to Liverpool.
Our recommended tip: Both teams score
Bookmakers seem to think the most likely outcome is for Liverpool to walk away with a clean sheet here. But as our scoreline prediction suggests, we disagree. This is for the reasons already stated and because both Sheffield and Liverpool have scored at least one goal in every match of the season thus far. We think the bookmakers may be underestimating Sheffield a little in this regard: perhaps still casting them with that newly promoted stigma. Nonetheless, this means more generous odds on this wager. For instance, you can get low-risk 10/11 odds on both teams scoring at BoyleSports.
This is an especially interesting match up considering it has been over a decade since these two last met, of course owing to Sheffield United’s demotion in 2007. It was in February of that year where Liverpool bested Sheffield United 4-0. Things were tighter the year before with a 1-1 draw and earlier that decade, in 2003, Liverpool got the overall advantage across two League Cup matches by a single goal. Their last contest before that was in 1994 but in all honesty, you could argue all these games are now outdated. Their head-to-head history is slightly in Liverpool’s favour, but it’s also not too relevant to modern predictions.

Players to watch: John Egan & Roberto Firmino
Sheffield United: John Egan
It is tempting to go with the goalscorers when we’re choosing any player to watch. But in some cases, your defensive prowess can be even more relevant and we think that is the case with this fixture. For that reason, the excellent John Egan is our pick here, especially after his terrific showing against Everton. It will be interesting to see if he can keep up his superb defending against an even fiercer opponent.
Liverpool: Roberto Firmino
It’s incredibly hard to pick a player to watch from Liverpool for all the right reasons. So far this season, you could make a case for a different man of the match from their team every single game: that is the depth of talent they have available to them. In this instance, we are going with Roberto Firmino. He has been absolutely astonishing in away games thus far, scoring in every one so far this season.
