Newcastle United make the long trip to Southampton on Saturday afternoon, with both teams in dreadful form. The two sides have only one win between them in the Premier League in 2018/19. Southampton won 2-0 at Crystal Palace on September 1, and have not won again. The Magpies are winless in the league this season. The pressure is building on both Saints boss Mark Hughes and his Newcastle counterpart Rafael Benitez, and defeat for either will surely see them one step closer to the sack.
The Saints managed a draw last time out, taking a point away at Bournemouth thanks to a 0-0 final score. They lost their three previous Premier League games, though. Newcastle have lost their last three Premier League games, with their last point coming from a 0-0 draw at Palace on September 22.
Southampton vs Newcastle United Prediction: Southampton 1-0 Newcastle
Despite both teams being in awful form, our prediction is that the Saints will edge this game by a single goal. Home advantage could be key on Saturday, with Newcastle having to make one of the Premier League’s longer journeys. Southampton managed to keep a clean sheet last time out, and that might give them something to build on. The Magpies, in contrast, seem to be sliding down into the mire, and there looks like being little that Benitez can do to change things. It could be a tough afternoon for any Geordie fans who make the long trek south.
Our recommended tip: Southampton 1-0
Our featured betting tip for this game comes from Betway, who are offering odds of 5/1 on Southampton winning the game 1-0. This bet matches our prediction of how the game will turn out. Newcastle don’t currently look like a team who really carry any significant threat to their opponents. Southampton have been in dreadful form, but have won once this season, and also have home advantage for the game. That might just be enough to get them over the line by a single goal. It would be unwise to expect a cracking game, though, given the form of these two teams.
These two sides have played each other on 34 previous occasions in the Premier League. Southampton have won 15 of those games, Newcastle 12 and there have been seven draws. Last season, they met twice in the league. The first meeting was at St Mary’s in October 2017, and ended in a 2-2 draw. Manolo Gabbiadini scored both of Southampton’s goals. The second meeting was at St James’ Park in March 2018. This time, Newcastle came out on top, winning the game 3-0. Brazilian player Kenedy scored two goals that day, with a third added by Scotland international Matt Ritchie.

Players to watch: Danny Ings & Joselu
If Southampton are to get out of the current mess in which they find themselves, they will need the goalscorers in the squad to find form. Striker Danny Ings has managed to find the net three times in the Premier League this season, and has shown that he can score goals if he gets the necessary service. He has hit the woodwork once, and has missed three big chances, too, though, so he needs to find some consistency.
Spanish forward Joselu is Newcastle’s top scorer in the league this season. He has only found the net twice in Premier League matches, though, highlighting where the Magpies’ problems lie. The Spaniard really needs to start finding some form if the Toon are to start climbing the table. He has managed just five shots on target this season, with both of his goals coming having been scored with headers. This weekend would be a good time to start scoring.
