Tottenham Hotspur vs Borussia Dortmund – Betting Tips & Predictions – 19-02

Last updated & checked: 10/08/2021

Tottenham Hotspur welcome Bundesliga outfit Borussia Dortmund to Wembley Stadium for the first leg of their Champions League knock-out tie on Wednesday evening, and Spurs will be looking to put a marker down. Mauricio Pochettino’s team have been knocked out of both domestic cup competitions in recent weeks, despite remaining strong in the Premier League.
Spurs will be without Harry Kane and Dele Alli, who are both injured. Dortmund’s English winger Jadon Sancho will be on show in his home city, though. The Englishman is an important cog in Dortmund’s machine, having provided seven goals and nine assists in his 21 Bundesliga appearances this season.
Dortmund reached this stage of the Champions League by topping Group A, ahead of Atletico Madrid. Spurs, in contrast, struggled to get through Group B, and progressed to the knock-out phase of the competition by virtue of their head-to-head record against Internazionale.

Tottenham Hotspur vs Borussia Dortmund Prediction: Spurs 1-1 Dortmund

Our prediction for this game is that it will end in a score draw, with 1-1 looking a likely outcome to us. While Spurs are still just about in the title race in the Premier League, they are facing a team who are top of the Bundesliga. Dortmund have drawn their last three league games, though, and have shown a tendency to concede as many goals as they score in recent weeks.
Jadon Sancho might well play a direct role in Dortmund’s goal, as he will be keen to show off his skills in his home city.

Our recommended tip: Draw, both score

Our feeling about this game is that it is going to end in a score draw, which is the type of result that Dortmund have had plenty of experience of in recent weeks. Ladbrokes are offering tempting odds of 10/3 on the game finishing in a draw with both teams scoring. This is a bet that gives you plenty of flexibility when it comes to the final outcome, but will bring some decent returns if the game does end in draw with both teams finding the net. A final score of 2-2 would not surprise us, either.

Previous matches

These two sides have met four times over the last three seasons, clashing in both the Europa League and Champions League. In the Europa League round of 16 in 2016, the teams played out a two-legged tie which was won by Dortmund. The final aggregate scoreline was 5-1 in favour of the German side, who won 3-0 in the first leg in Germany.
The sides also met in the Champions League group stage in 2017, meeting home and away. The game at Wembley ended in a 3-1 win for Spurs. The second game in Germany ended 2-1 to Spurs.

Players to watch: Son Heung-min & Jadon Sancho

In the absence of Harry Kane, who has directly contributed to 48% of Tottenham’s Champions League goals in the last three seasons, much of Spurs’ attacking burden will fall on the slim shoulders of Korean forward Son Heung-min. Dortmund are well aware of the player’s prowess, as he spent seven years playing in the Bundesliga. He has also scored twice against Dortmund in last season’s Champions League group stage.
English winger Jadon Sancho will be desperate to show spectators in his home city just how he has been progressing over in Germany. The 18-year-old is the Bundesliga’s joint-top assist provider, with nine to his name in the league so far this season. He has also scored seven goals in his 21 Bundesliga appearances in the current campaign. Now a full England international, Sancho will be keen to contribute at Wembley.
