It’s the last game for these two sides before Christmas and we imagine that Manchester United are hoping for a holiday gift in the form of an easy victory from season strugglers Watford. It’s not that Watford have had nothing to show for their efforts, nor have Manchester United lacked in their own issues. But when you look at the standings, you have to accept that after a certain point, the results speak for themselves.
Watford have simply failed to get the job done time after time. United have had difficulties of their own too. They looked lucky to draw against Everton in their last match and still have been lacking creativity without the assistance of Paul Pogba. Still, it’s hard to be too pessimistic about a team that has defeated both Manchester City and Tottenham in recent weeks.
Watford vs Manchester United Prediction: Watford 0-2 Man United
The main thing United fans should be worried about is their team underestimating their opponents, allowing Watford to snatch a shock victory. Manchester do have weaknesses that they are capable of exploiting, after all. With that said, we think it’s unlikely. Manchester United will be well aware of how important momentum is in the Premier League, and would be fools to make such a fundamental error. Taking all this into account, we have to conclude that Manchester United are the likely winners here. Based on the consistently poor results of Watford, we are going with a 2-0 scoreline to the away side.
Our recommended tip: Man United win to nil
When we were considering our scoreline prediction, the thing which required the most consideration in our opinion was the amount of goals we thought Manchester United would score. The reason for this is Watford’s goal-scoring record has been so dire this season that a clean sheet for Manchester United seemed very likely. In the last five games, Watford have only managed to score a single goal. Considering this – and the fact that we think United will likely win – our recommended tip is for Manchester United to win to nil. BoyleSports have medium-risk 9/4 odds on this result.
What may be surprising to some is that Watford and Manchester United haven’t had as many matches as you might think. What probably isn’t surprising is that Manchester United have dominated the vast majority of them. Out of 32 matches, United have won 22. Not only that but the most positive results for Watford came in the 1980s. United have won 16 out of 17 of their last matches in this fixture, and were it not for a single victory in 2016, Watford would have last beat Man United way back in 1986. Just like the Premier League standings, after a certain point, the stats don’t lie.

Players to watch: Gerard Deulofeu & Mason Greenwood
Watford: Gerard Deulofeu
Although Watford have struggled to get the job done consistently over this season, their best chances throughout have almost always come at the hands of Gerard Deulofeu. He came closest to scoring against Liverpool and Crystal Palace most recently, and was the MVP in their win against Norwich. If Watford are going to get the upset, we think it’s extremely likely that Deulofeu will be a key reason why.
Manchester United: Mason Greenwood
Considering he has been their finest player this season, Marcus Rashford is probably the obvious choice here. But he was not the man who saved United from an embarrassing loss to Everton. That honour went to late match substitute Mason Greenwood. On top of that, he absolutely shone against AZ Alkmaar, scoring twice in under 10 minutes. We talked about that need for more creativity, and Greenwood may be a big piece in solving that puzzle.
