Their starts to the season couldn’t have been more different. Manchester United began in blistering form, battering Chelsea 4-0 to give them their best result at Old Trafford against the legendary side since 1965. West Ham, on the other hand, were victims of the mighty Manchester City to the tune of 5-0. However, there were positives in the performance, and West Ham looked unlucky to have lost by such a margin.
Combine that with the fact that Manchester United were unable to follow up on their momentum against Chelsea – looking uneven in a draw against Wolves and failing against Crystal Palace – and you have a game here that is more interesting than it initially looks on paper. West Ham look renewed since their victory over Watford. However, a toothless encounter against Villa, and Manchester United’s win over Leicester, has once again swung the momentum in favour of the Red Devils.
West Ham United vs Manchester United Prediction: West Ham 1-1 Man United
We really feel like this one could go either way. Manchester United may have looked better against Leicester, but it was still far from showcasing them in top form. Meanwhile, West Ham have surely shown enough to make this one as close as a coin flip. Following Man United’s loss to Crystal Palace, manager Hodgeson said that the team is going to have to “come to terms” with the fact that teams lower in the league will be “hard to breakdown”. We think that prophecy will be fulfilled here, meaning our scoreline prediction is for a 1-1 stalemate.
Our recommended tip: Both teams score
Manchester United have, despite some issues, scored in every game so far this season. West Ham can’t quite claim the same but have proven their attacking credentials beyond much doubt, especially against Norwich and Watford. Considering that and the fact that West Ham will no doubt be smelling blood, while Manchester United are desperate to show themselves as serious contenders once again, we think neither defences will come out of this one unscathed. This means that our recommended tip is for both teams to score, with low-risk 61/100 odds available from MarathonBet.
Some may be surprised by our prediction here, as Manchester United are historically the more successful team. Indeed, they hold the statistical advantage in this fixture, with around a third more victories overall. However, a closer look at recent games shows that a draw seems very possible. United won their last outing in April, sure. But West Ham’s victory in September 2018 and the stalemate earlier that year show that these two are more evenly-matched than many might believe. Ultimately, it’s what these teams can do now which counts.

Players to watch: Sébastien Haller & Marcus Rashford
West Ham United: Sébastien Haller
While we have been realistic about how Manchester United have played thus far this season, have no doubts that they remain a team to be taken very seriously. West Ham will need to be at their very best for this one, and there’s no better in their squad than the magnificent Sébastien Haller. Their MVP so far this season, he led them to victory over Watford and Norwich, and is likely the most dangerous player for Manchester’s defences.
Manchester United: Marcus Rashford
One of the bright spots of Manchester United’s thus far rather difficult season is Marcus Rashford. He has already amassed three goals this season and also led his team to a much needed three-point boost against Leicester City. He is an important reminder to West Ham – and the to the rest of the Premier League – of the quality that still remains under the Old Trafford umbrella.
