Why past Grand National results matter

The Grand National results matter first and foremost because about two-thirds of UK adults place a bet on this race. It is called the world’s most famous steeplechase for a reason, because it has a global audience of approximately 600,000,000 people. Taking a look down the Grand National winners list gives you an idea which owners and trainers particularly target the event for runners. There is no better trial for this Aintree marathon than the race itself.

That is why it can pay off not just to look at Grand National winners, but those who placed and completed the course in-behind. Each and every year, the BHA handicapper will rate horses on what they have achieved in that season. Those entered in the Grand National may get in lightly based on subsequent exploits after the weights are published and from year to year and race to race these can go up or down. This is how a handicap works. A horse may run off a lesser weight at Aintree from one year to the next and so, with an extended four miles and two furlongs to last, the lesser the burden the better. None of the horses listed that are Grand National winners have triumphed at Aintree more than once. Three jockeys have in Ruby Walsh, Davy Russell and Leighton Aspell, and two current trainers; Gordon Elliott and Nigel Twiston-Davies. Red Rum is the only three-time Grand National winner, but Tiger Roll has won it twice now.
