The Grand National results are always awaited with great anticipation. For 10 or 15 minutes on a Saturday afternoon in April, Aintree racecourse near Liverpool takes centre stage in the sporting world. Grand National winners are ones that last home in the ultimate test of equine endurance having crossed 30 fences on Merseyside.
It is a major achievement just to complete the gruelling course. Horses that make it on to the list of Grand National winners join equine legends like Red Rum and Golden Miller. It takes more than just skill to win this race. Luck, certainly looking back over history, plays a part too in determining Grand National winners.
This page sets everything in its proper context and it is just as important as our Grand National odds comparison. Grand National results are important for lots of reasons and there’s more on why they are important below. You will also find a full list of Grand National winners going back 25 years, so you can look at trends and see which trainers and owners have targeted the race successfully. We also provide full Grand National results for recent renewals of this world-famous race so that you get some help with your Grand National betting.
You can see which horses finished, their starting price, age, weight and special Grand National rating as well as the winning distance. For your reference, OpenOdds horse racing experts have also listed non-finishers with horses who were brought down (BD), fell (F), pulled up (PU) or unseated their rider (UR). Don’t delay. Why past Grand National results matter
The Grand National results matter first and foremost because about two-thirds of UK adults place a bet on this race. It is called the world’s most famous steeplechase for a reason, because it has a global audience of approximately 600,000,000 people. Taking a look down the Grand National winners list gives you an idea which owners and trainers particularly target the event for runners. There is no better trial for this Aintree marathon than the race itself.
That is why it can pay off not just to look at Grand National winners, but those who placed and completed the course in-behind. Such horses have experience not just of the occasion, but more importantly handling the spruce-covered fences which are bigger than regulation obstacles. Animals that go to Aintree and over the Grand National course, whether in the actual race or others on it, more than once may have the ultimate goal of tackling the big one.
Each and every year, the BHA handicapper will rate horses on what they have achieved in that season. Those entered in the Grand National may get in lightly based on subsequent exploits after the weights are published and from year to year and race to race these can go up or down. This is how a handicap works. A horse may run off a lesser weight at Aintree from one year to the next and so, with an extended four miles and two furlongs to last, the lesser the burden the better. Check out previous Grand National results today below, as we’ve provided the full picture on how horses performed at Aintree in the last few years.
