The major event in horse racing to look out for
Before Royal Ascot races get underway, there’s plenty to whet your whistle with in the world of horse racing during the calendar year. The Cheltenham Festival, where the very best horses over jumps go, takes centre stage for four days in the middle of March and hot off the heels of that comes the Grand National meeting at Aintree. That extended 4m 2f handicap race on Merseyside over unique spruce covered fences is the ultimate taste of a thoroughbred’s stamina and several supporting events have grown up around it in April. Over in Ireland, the jumps season comes to a close with the Punchestown Festival, then it’s all about the Flat with the Guineas at Newmarket in early May. The Dante Festival at York, then the Epsom Oaks and The Derby follow soon after which leads us on nicely to the Royal Ascot race card itself. Those five days set the standard for the Flat season and the summer that follows. Things move fast now with the July Festival back at Newmarket, then Glorious Goodwood and the Ebor Festival at York later in August. Horses then head for end of season tests over Irish Champions Weekend in September or the Arc de Triomphe meeting in France and British Champions Day back at Ascot in October. Jumps action returns with a vengeance thereafter and there’s a host of absorbing National Hunt racing which peaks in and around Christmas time with the King George VI Chase at Kempton and Leopardstown’s festive meeting that rounds off the year in style.
