Spurs win 1st half

If the last few weeks of football have had a theme, it’s of major English teams suffering a fall from grace. Liverpool might be making most of the headlines, but Tottenham Hotspur have also had a similar dramatic downfall. They lost to RB Leipzig in the Champions League, to both Chelsea and Wolves in the Premier League, and to Norwich in the FA Cup.

For a team like Burnley – who are often underrated by all but their supporters – this kind of weakness represents a serious opportunity, especially as they’ve gone six Premier League games without a loss. They’ve even proven themselves against the big names, toppling Manchester United and dragging Arsenal to a stalemate. Spurs will have to fight hard, and through their injury woes, to prevent this hungry team from taking advantage of their situation.

Burnley vs Tottenham Hotspur Prediction: Burnley 1-1 Spurs

This is a tough one because the result largely depends on which version of Tottenham shows up. Burnley have settled into a nice groove, so we think their level of performance is fairly predictable – which is no criticism, we’re predicting them to turn up at a very high level. Spurs, on the other hand, have proven much more inconsistent, and there’s more uncertainty due to injury. With that said, we’re not sure if Burnley at their best can beat Tottenham at their best. In truth, we don’t think Spurs can hit their highest level, but can bring enough firepower to extinguish a Burnley victory. Therefore, our scoreline prediction is 1-1.

Our Betting Tip
Spurs win 1st half
Odds
12/5

One of the easiest elements of our scoreline prediction is that Spurs will score. Tottenham rarely go a game without tasting the back of their net, with their creative offence being their greatest asset. We expect – considering their recent disappointments and with a point to prove in the face of injuries – for them to come into this one all guns blazing. Not only that but they’ve scored first in their last three outings, and there’s a good chance their onslaught means Burnley will have to wait until the second half for a receipt. Therefore, we think Spurs will win the first half and BetVictor are offering good 12/5 odds on this result.

Previous matches

Despite nearly a hundred games played over a century, there remains little between Burnley and Tottenham Hotspur. In fact, the latter has a winning advantage of a mere six games, which is very little in the grand scheme of things. Spurs do have more of an advantage in their modern contests though. Were it not for Burnley’s February 2019 victory, the away side would have gone 11 games in a row without a loss against Burnley. Still, the closeness of these two teams both showcases how much Burnley have improved and how sharply Tottenham’s fortunes have fallen.

Players to watch: Ben Mee & Lucas Moura

Burnley: Ben Mee

Key to gaining a point here – or possibly three – will be the ability to withstand the onslaught of Tottenham’s often devastating offence. That’s why our pick for player to watch, and arguably the most important player for Burnley in this game, is Ben Mee. He has made a name for himself by astonishing crowds and his opponents with both his passing accuracy and his ability to clear the ball from danger.

Tottenham Hotspur: Lucas Moura

While Tottenham are no doubt weakened by injury, they’ve proven even in losses that they have enough backup firepower to continue to be a challenging offensive force. The lack of Harry Kane and Son Heung-min has already allowed other players to showcase their skills. And we think that on this occasion, it may be time for Lucas Moura to step up and prove that Spurs have plenty left in the tank even when they are not at full power.
