Wayne Rooney has a reunion on his hands this Thursday evening as his former club roll into town for an FA Cup fifth round meeting. The visitors have been experiencing a relatively good run in recent weeks, the weekend’s draw at Everton continuing what is now an eight-game unbeaten run; United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer could well see this is his opportunity to win a first trophy as boss for a club he served so well as a player.

Rooney and co. may well have to treat this game as their one remaining chance to have a season of note. They currently lie eight points outside the Championship play-off spots and the weekend’s 3-1 dismantling of Sheffield Wednesday was their first win in five attempts. That said, both of these sides have been so inconsistent this season that it’s hard to imagine a result that could be a genuine surprise here, so let’s not write anyone off.

Derby County vs Manchester United Prediction: Derby County 2-3 Manchester United

Derby have Premier League quality in their squad, amply demonstrated by the presence in midfield of Rooney, but augmented by the likes of winger Tom Lawrence (himself a former United trainee). However, their current position of thirteenth in the Championship suggests that they lack top-flight consistency, and will struggle to put together 90 minutes-worth of winning football – even if the opponent is as flaky as United. With the addition of Nigerian international Odion Ighalo, the Red Devils suddenly have options up front, and they’re scoring a lot more goals as a result.

These sides are certainly more blessed up front than they are further back, and the likely presence of a few less-experienced players on the red side means that there is ample possibility of open spaces for creative types to wreak havoc. Derby’s best bet here is trying to get ahead early on and exploit a lack of confidence in their opponents. This might well offer them the chance to get ahead in the game, but it will also leave gaps for United’s talented clutch of attacking players. As such, a few goals before half-time would not be surprising; Betsafe’s odds of 3/2 on that are worth a look.

Previous matches

Although Derby dropped out of the Premier League twelve years ago, these teams have been thrown together surprisingly often in cup competitions, most recently in a League Cup encounter last season, when Derby were managed by Frank Lampard and United by Jose Mourinho. On that occasion, Lampard overcame his former mentor in an entertaining match.

Mata grabbed the opening goal on three minutes, but a second-half fightback saw loan star Harry Wilson equalise, and Jack Marriott put the visitors ahead before, deep into injury time, Romelu Lukaku equalised. This took the match to penalties, fifteen of which were converted in a row before Phil Jones missed, handing the tie to Derby.

Players to watch: Wayne Rooney & Odion Ighalo

Although his career has been impacted by serious injury, Rooney’s quality has always resided in his ability to think faster than the average player and try things that others won’t. As such, his diminishing pace isn’t an issue, and Derby have themselves a gifted, versatile player with experience at the very top of the game. The one issue they may find, as they have more than once since his arrival, is that the rest of their players may not always be on Rooney’s wavelength; though that doesn’t stop the occasional moment of magic.

Ighalo’s signing irritated many on the red side of Manchester; his past CV not instilling confidence given that the last three sides on it are Shanghai Shenhua, Changchun Yatai and Watford. However, his record – particularly on that stint with the Hornets – indicates that when he is offered a chance he tends to take it. The Nigerian was on the scoresheet in United’s Europa League tie with Brugge, and is now very much finding his feet after a deadline day move to a club he has supported all his life; a starting berth here may be rewarded with goals.
