Everton welcome Manchester United to Goodison Park on Sunday lunchtime, for what should be a cracking Premier League match. Marco Silva’s team currently sit in ninth place in the table, and are hunting their fourth victory in five Premier League games, as they look to force their way into the European qualification places. United will want to assuage the pain of defeat to Barcelona in the Champions League by claiming three vital points in the race for a top-four finish.
Everton will have to do without Andre Gomes, who has been suspended for three games after accepting an FA charge of violent conduct relating to an incident in the recent game against Fulham. The Toffees can take heart from the fact that United have lost their last two Premier League games on the road, against Wolverhampton Wanderers and Arsenal.

Everton vs Manchester United Prediction: Toffees 1-0 Red Devils

Our prediction for this game is that Everton will cause something of an upset and win the game 1-0. The victory will be narrow and hard-fought, and the game might well be decided by an error rather than a moment of quality. United have lost their last two away games in the Premier League, and may also be somewhat demoralised by their Champions League defeat to Barcelona. The effort of the second leg against Barca might have drained some energy from the Red Devils too, giving the Toffees a real chance of taking three points.

Our recommended tip: Everton, 1X2

Our featured tip for this game comes from Paddy Power. The Irish bookie is offering odds of 21/10 on the 1X2 market Everton winning the game. We think that this is a good bet given United’s recent poor away form, and the draining effect that their Champions League defeat to Barcelona is likely to have had on the players’ energy levels. Everton lost 2-0 away at Fulham last weekend, but beat Arsenal 1-0 and Chelsea 2-0 in their last two home games, highlighting their strength at Goodison Park. United have lost their last two league away matches too, showing some vulnerability on the road.

Previous matches

Everton have lost 36 Premier League matches to Manchester United, which is more than any team has lost against another side in the history of the competition. The teams have met 53 times in total in the Premier League, and Everton have won just eight of those games, with six of those victories coming at Goodison Park. United have won 16 times at Goodison in the Premier League.
Earlier this season, the two sides met at Old Trafford in the Premier League in October. United won the game 2-1, thanks to goals from Paul Pogba and Anthony Martial.

Players to watch: Lucas Digne & Anthony Martial

Everton defender Lucas Digne is his team’s leading assist maker this season, with the Frenchman having provided his team-mates with four assists in 2018/19. The left back has also scored three goals in his 31 Premier League appearances over the course of the current campaign. Defensively, Digne is an important player too, and he has contributed to 10 Premier League clean sheets this season. His 10 blocked shots and 55 interceptions are testament to his defensive importance.
United forward Anthony Martial is one to watch on Sunday. The Frenchman has scored in his last three Premier League matches against the Toffees. The last United player to score in four consecutive away matches against the same opponent was Wayne Rooney, who achieved the feat against Hull City in 2014. Martial has contributed 10 goals and two assists in 24 Premier League appearances in 2018/19. One of those goals has come from the penalty spot.
