It’s a battle for survival here, as both Huddersfield Town and Newcastle United stare relegation in the face following disastrous starts to the season, which saw both go double digits without a win. These two were worlds apart last season but with the Magpies suffering one of their worst runs in recent memory, the bookmakers are actually predicting Huddersfield to take the win here. And it would certainly be quite something to see Newcastle fall to the team they flew by in their victorious 2016/17 Championship win: the same which saw Huddersfield promoted following Championship playoffs.

Their recent histories have a lot of parallels, and this is the opportunity for each to leave the other – for the moment at least – in their dust.

Huddersfield Town vs Newcastle United Prediction: Huddersfield 1-0 Newcastle

Well, we certainly don’t think that either side is going to find this to be an easy victory. As has already been mentioned, Huddersfield and Newcastle’s seasons have been mirror images of one another. Both started terribly before gathering momentum and, before this match, losing it once more. They’ve each been impressive in bursts but have lacked overall.

We’re going to have to give this one to Huddersfield though because they’ve shown a little more potential performance wise over the last few months. However, it really is a neck-and-neck situation. Because of that, and due to neither team exactly being prolific in terms of goals as of late, we think there will be a repeat of history here and Huddersfield Town will come away with a 1-0 win.

Our recommended tip: Huddersfield win to nil

It probably won’t come as a surprise that these evenly-matched teams enjoy extremely similar odds on a win here. Huddersfield do come into the contest with the slightest of advantages though, just edging ahead of their opponents with a 37% win probability to Newcastle’s 31%. Ladbrokes are offering match odds of 27/20 for Huddersfield, compared to 11/5 for Newcastle. However, taking our scoreline prediction into account, our recommended tip is to go slightly higher risk and predict that Huddersfield will keep a clean sheet for a higher potential ROI. Ladbrokes are advertising good medium-risk 14/5 odds on this result.

Previous matches

Remember when we said we thought these two would repeat history? Well, that’s because their last two matches ended in a 1-0 result for each. If you think that’s frustrating for those of us looking for some breathing room between these two, then consider that their only four matches in the last eight years have literally gone back-and-forth.

Huddersfield won 2-1 in 2016, then Newcastle managed 3-1 in 2017. Following this, it went 1-0 to Huddersfield then 1-0 to Newcastle. They had a 2009 encounter which gave a 4-3 win to Newcastle but before that, in modern times, you have to go back to 1984 for another contest between the two. There’s not even much in it historically, with the home team having a handful more wins in a few dozen games beginning in 1920. These are astonishingly close results.

Players to watch: Alex Pritchard & Salomón Rondón

Huddersfield Town: Alex Pritchard

Considering that Aaron Mooy – the only man who has managed to score more than one goal this season –, as well as club captain Tommy Smith both find themselves out on injury, it will be for others to step up in this contest. One man who has shown potential this season is Alex Pritchard, who impressed so much in that vital win against Wolves that he’s a target for the team come the January transfer window. A creative, versatile player who has not yet hit his peak, this is the perfect opportunity for him to shine once more.

Newcastle United: Salomón Rondón

The Magpies might not have had too much to celebrate this season. If there is one thing to find hope in though, it’s the emerging partnership between Salomón Rondón and Ayoze Pérez, and either could have been placed here. Their connection has seen results. It was, after all, a cross by Rondón that saw Pérez score in their heartbreaking 2-1 loss to Wolves. However, Rondón just gets the nod here off the back of his astonishing performance against Bournemouth, which saw him score both goals in their 2-1 victory.
