If the last few weeks have taught us anything, it’s that although the Premier League is entering its latter stages – with a winner all but crowned – that doesn’t mean that the excitement is simmering down just yet. Leicester City vs Aston Villa is a perfect example.

In one corner, you have the home team, who are hoping to maintain their place in the top four as two rebounding contenders in Chelsea and Manchester United look to replace them. In the other, Aston Villa are slowly running out of time to stave off relegation, with three points between them and safety. Not only that, but these two already have a heated rivalry left over from the EFL Cup, where underdogs Aston Villa emerged victorious.

It’s these smaller stories which make the top English league so interesting, and we can’t wait to see who comes out on top in this chapter.

Leicester City vs Aston Villa Prediction: Leicester 2-1 Villa

We suppose the real question we have to answer here is what matters more: a recent head-to-head victory or an overall more consistent season? We think it depends on the specifics of each, and in this instance – because those games were so close and the gulf between them throughout the season is so vast – we feel Leicester just about take the edge here. We are predicting that this will be a very close game though, based on the EFL clashes as well as the fact that both teams tend to put up a fight even in losing efforts. With that in mind, our scoreline prediction is 2-1 to Leicester.

Our Betting Tip
Iheanacho last scorer
Odds
4/1

Aston Villa are well aware of the skills of Kelechi Iheanacho. In fact, he is the only player to have breached their defence in both those EFL Cup clashes – largely thanks to the heroic efforts of Villa’s goalkeeper Ørjan Nyland. Not only that but both of those goals came late in the game. More recently against Norwich, Iheanacho once again showcased his ability to be a consistent threat no matter how many minutes were left on the clock. For these reasons, we think he’s a great pick for last goalscorer, and you’ll find good 4/1 odds from 888Sport on this prediction.

Previous matches

We couldn’t help but talk at length about their most recent clashes, as it was too relevant to our predictions to avoid. Looking back further though, there’s over 100 matches and 100 years between these two to dive into. Leicester hold the overall statistical edge – with 42 wins to Villa’s 34 – and a slight recent advantage too, EFL Cup aside. They beat Villa 4-1 in December last year, drew 1-1 in 2016, and won two out of three clashes in 2015, plus a 2-1 clash in 2014. Just as important is that almost all of these games are very close, with all but one having a goal or less between them.

Players to watch: Jamie Vardy & Ørjan Nyland

Leicester City: Jamie Vardy

This may be a surprise considering our recommended tip. However, considering his form throughout this season, maybe not. Vardy’s injury has been both a source of frustration and, in some ways, an opportunity for others to showcase their abilities. Ultimately though, all eyes are going to be on Leicester’s greatest hitmaker as he steps back on the pitch. Whether he’s able to go at full speed just yet is unknown, but it’s hard to imagine him not having a serious impact.

Aston Villa: Ørjan Nyland

The last line of defence between Leicester’s intimidating forwards and victory is the man who denied them at the EFL Cup, and that is the brilliant Ørjan Nyland. He was an absolute hero in the second-leg clash, with a series of spectacular saves keeping Leicester’s goal sheet to one against all odds and opening a path for victory. Fans will be hoping for a similar performance here.
