Tottenham Hotspur face an uphill battle here. Let’s begin with the obvious: RB Leipzig have a goal advantage from the first leg. On top of that, Spurs’ injury woes are ongoing, and they will be far from at full power in this contest. They are also playing away and have failed to win in six games, losing five of those contests.

RB Leipzig, on the other hand, have been their usual reliable selves. They showcased their strength in an astonishing 5-0 win over Schalke and come into this game off the back off two steady – if not awe-inspiring – draws in the Bundesliga to keep them in the German title race.

Tottenham will likely be more aggressive here, and that kind of risky strategy does occasionally pay off in games like these. The question though, is whether they have the firepower to pull it off.

RB Leipzig vs Tottenham Hotspur Prediction: RB Leipzig 2-1 Spurs

Do note that this is a scoreline prediction for this leg and not the final aggregate score. However, we’re not sure – even with the extra motivation and the tendency to take more risks – that Tottenham will be able to topple RB Leipzig. Spurs seem too chaotic, and the home team too professional and self-assured to fall to mere aggression. Still, Spurs are capable of being a serious attacking force even in a weakened state. That means we don’t think RB Leipzig will come out unscathed, and will need to provide a receipt or two of their own. WIth all this in mind, our scoreline prediction is 2-1 to RB Leipzig.

Our Betting Tip
L Moura scores first
Odds
10/1

We think that Tottenham will score first. As the team on the backfoot, they are more likely to come out of the gate with a strong offensive game plan. The question then falls to who will be behind the goal. We think in a match with these kinds of stakes – and in the absence of their key strikers – that Lucas Moura has a very solid chance of being that man. He may not have scored since Southampton, but his lethal striking ability should not be underestimated. The bookies clearly disagree, to the extent that you can get competitive 10/1 odds from BoyleSports on this wager.

Previous matches

Naturally, this game exists very much in the shadow of their previous Champions League clash, with the 1-0 advantage for RB Leipzig no doubt greatly influencing how this match will go. And the influence that event will have is even bigger when you consider that is it the only time these European juggernauts have met. That means their experience against one another is limited, resulting in an exciting, fresh clash for us viewers as well as a competition which has the possibility of leaving either team open to surprises.

Players to watch: Timo Werner & Hugo Lloris

RB Leipzig: Timo Werner

In the run up to the first leg, all of the talk was about the extraordinarily talented Timo Werner – heavily linked with a summer move to Liverpool – and this opportunity to showcase his skills against one of England’s best. And boy did he deliver. Only one goal scored but the difference, and his pace and consistency meant he was a constant threat. The final breakthrough to the back of the net felt almost inevitable. We say almost, and that is because of our next pick.

Tottenham Hotspur: Hugo Lloris

While many headlines focus on Lucas Moura and Dele Alli, and their struggles to stay fit and keep Tottenham afloat, we doubt that anyone who watched that first leg would question our choice here. Between Werner and complete annihilation stood Hugo Lloris. He made four saves to keep Spurs alive in the Champions League, and they may need similar heroics from the club captain if they wish to pull off the upset here.
