Southampton have enjoyed an inspired comeback over the last couple of weeks, first toppling the mighty Tottenham before once again proving their mettle against Brighton. Here though they face their biggest challenge yet and perhaps the ultimate test of whether this turnaround is for good in Premier League leaders Liverpool. They have – as their lofty position suggests – been on stunning form. The side have been undefeated in or out of the Premier League since the first week of January.
However, if you think this will be an easy ride for the Reds, consider that both managed the same result against Spurs. And with relegation still very much a possibility for Southampton, they will no doubt have a serious fight on their hands.
Southampton vs Liverpool Prediction: Southampton 0-2 Liverpool
As much as we have enjoyed the Saints’ comeback throughout March, we think that Liverpool will simply be too much for them to overcome here. Remember that as much as this match matters to Southampton, the same can be said for their opponents. They’re currently battling it out with Manchester City for Premier League dominance and know that every game counts. With that in mind, we have to base our prediction on performance quality throughout the season and in that regard, Liverpool are almost peerless. Now, Southampton have proven themselves no pushover but our scoreline prediction remains 2-0 to Liverpool.
Our recommended tip: Liverpool win to nil
With 15 places and 46 points between them in the Premier League standings, it’s no surprise that Liverpool are the clear favourites here. They come into this contest with a huge 68% win probability to Southampton’s 12%, making a bet on the away side a safe one. You’ll find low-risk 4/11 match odds at Paddy Power. However, considering that Liverpool have managed to beat Southampton with a clean sheet in their last three encounters, we expect them to achieve the same thing here. Therefore, we recommend that you wager on Liverpool winning to nil to get 13/10 odds and a higher potential ROI.
While there’s no doubt that Liverpool have the advantage in their head-to-head history, it’s probably not quite as bad for the home side as some may expect it to be. Sure, Liverpool have won the last three fixtures between the two – and have done so with a clean sheet – but Southampton did manage to win twice in 2017, and again in 2016. What’s clear is that although the Saints are fighting an uphill battle here, it is not one that is insurmountable, even if it is probably quite unlikely. History is on the side of Liverpool but it leaves hope for the underdogs.

Players to watch: Jan Bednarek & Sadio Mané
Southampton: Jan Bednarek
While Southampton will certainly have to bring the fight on the offensive front to have any chance of pulling off the upset, perhaps more important will be their ability to stave off the world-class attacking ability of Liverpool. Jan Bednarek will be key to their success in that department. We saw just how talented he is in Southampton’s victory over Brighton. This is a bigger challenge, for sure, and it will be interesting to see how he copes here.
Liverpool: Sadio Mané
With the amount of talent that’s available to Liverpool, picking a player to watch is always tricky. For instance, you could quite easily choose Andrew Robertson off the back of his brilliant assist against Tottenham. However, we think that Liverpool will be looking to their forwards to bring the pain here. And there’s no one better in their squad for that job than the ever brilliant Sadio Mané.
