Colombia – Group H – Overview and Colombia betting tips

Colombia qualified for their second successive World Cup and will be hoping to make a similar positive impression much like they did in Brazil four years ago. The South American side attracted a lot of praise for their attacking, quick style of play that brought the best out of talented players such as James Rodriguez.

That ultimately ended in the quarter-final exit and they will be hoping to reach a similar stage this time around in Russia given the quality they have in their squad. Here at Open Odds we will give you the lowdown on the side, looking the World Cup 2018 Colombia team, Colombia betting odds and analysing which players could make a real impact this summer.

Colombia prediction: How well will they do?

colombia world cup betting

Colombia have good odds to top Group H

Colombia are in a very exciting group that consists of Poland, Japan, Senegal and themselves. Obviously it is four teams from different continents and that range of styles should ensure that Group H is one to watch and it also makes it more unpredictable. Yet, whilst it’s undoubtedly tough, Colombia will see this as a great opportunity to top the group which is unusual for a side that were drawn as the second seed. You could make a case for all four sides qualifying but it is Poland that should present Colombia with the biggest challenge. However, we think that the South American side have more options in the final third that should see them qualify as group winners. That can be taken at odds of 11/8 with Sky Bet.

If Colombia were lucky to avoid the big hitters from Pot One in the draw, they were less fortunate with how the format is planned out for them. Those who progress from Group H will play those who progress from Group G and that is almost certain to be Belgium and England. Should Colombia finish first, they would play whoever finished second in that group, should Colombia finish second they will play the group winners.

We reckon they will top the group and play England in the last 16 which would be a really tough game to call and a fixture that both wouldn’t be pleased with. But, we would just about side with the Three Lions should it come to this because they have a little bit more quality over the pitch, even if there’s not much in it. Given that, we are recommending a bet on Colombia to be eliminated in the last 16 which is 6/4 with Bet Victor. As they are almost certain to play England or Belgium after qualifying this is a good value bet.

Journey to the World Cup — Who did Colombia beat to qualify?

colombia world cup betting

Colombia showed their quality through some tough CONMEBOL qualifiers

Qualifying to the World Cup is easy for a lot of countries, particularly in Europe, however it’s anything but that in South America. The CONMEBOL section is without doubt the toughest to advance from and that is backed up this year by the fact that Chile failed to qualify – the Copa America holders.

Anyway, Colombia did manage to qualify but like everyone else, except Brazil, who made it to Russia there was a lot of nervy moments on the way. Going into the final round of fixtures there were many, many scenarios that meant five teams had the chance to finish in the two automatic places and the one play-off place that was up for grabs.

Colombia knew a result in Peru was likely to secure their qualification and that’s what they got, earning a 1-1 draw. It rounded off an unconvincing qualifying campaign for the side that saw them fall to some heavy defeats in Argentina and Uruguay but in the end they got the job done. And, given the tough nature of qualifying from South America that’s all you can ask for.

Best players for Colombia: Who should you be betting on?

James Rodriguez is expected to be Colombia’s top goalscorer

Colombia have some fantastic players in their squad that will be familiar to a lot of English fans. Goalkeeper David Opsina and defender Davinson Sanchez both play in North London, whilst Juan Caudrado is doing well at Juventus and Yerry Mina is a new man at Barcelona.

Up top, they have several very good options including Carlos Bacca, Luis Muriel and Radamel Falcao who all bring something different to the team when they play. However, there’s no doubt that the star man of this team is James Rodriguez, who really announced himself as an elite player in this competition four years ago.

That earned him a move to Real Madrid and whilst things didn’t always go to plan there, he has rediscovered his best form at Bayern Munich this season which is great news for the national team. For Colombia he has a lot of responsibility and will be key to how they play. As a number ten he will be give license to roam and will look to make things happen in the final third.

Given that, we are going to recommend Rodriguez to be Colombia’s top scorer at the World Cup at odds of 3/1 with Bet Victor. It represents good value because not only is he very good in front of goal but the strikers in front of him are likely to rotate. Rodriguez will be the main man and is sure to play every minute of the competition.

Who manages Colombia?

Jose Pekerman is renowned for his attacking style of play

Argentinian boss Jose Pekerman has been in charge of the Colombia national team since 2012 and has done a good job on the whole. He took them to the quarter-final four years and they’ve done okay in the Copa America’s since without ever getting close to winning one though.

Fans will have big expectations ahead of this tournament though given the quality they have in the squad and it will be up to Pekerman to decide on the right approach. Generally, he favours an attacking style that brings the best out of his attacking players and Colombia often are forward-thinking in the way they play which suits them.

Why bet on Colombia?

Colombia will be a tough opposition for all in the 2018 World Cup

This World Cup team Colombia will be an exciting World Cup 2018 participant and will certainly add to the tournament with their flair and attacking skill. They will be an attractive option for punters quite simply because of the quality they have in their side. They have a strong defence but it’s going forward where they really stand out.

They have goals from various attacking positions and can play effectively in a variety of ways, particularly on the break. The only negative is the set up for the group. They should advance from Group H but will then face a tough test in the form of England or Belgium. So, if they are to replicate their promising tournament from four years ago and reach the last eight they will have to do it the hard way.
