Panama prediction: How well will they do?

panama world cup betting

How can Panama survive at the 2018 World Cup?

Unfortunately for Panama, we aren’t giving them much chance at all when they actually get to Russia but again we will stress the real achievement for them is just getting there. Once they were handed a group with Belgium and England any chance of qualifying disappeared although they will no doubt enjoy the test of playing against two huge footballing nations.

Quite simply, they don’t have the quality to compete at that level and whilst they will make things difficult for the two sides and they may upset them with their physical approach, they are nowhere near the same standard when it comes to playing. Given that, the target for Panama will be to avoid heavy beatings when they face the European pair.

Tunisia, the other side, in the group, present Panama with a realistic chance of getting a point but even then we have to acknowledge they will begin that game as outsiders. As expected though, the bookmakers see Panama as the weakest side in Group G and they are as short as 1/2 to finish bottom of the four sides with Sky Bet.

The only way you could boost the odds with Panama finishing bottom is to include it in a double and Belgium to win the group with Panama finishing bottom is 7/4 with the same bookmakers and looks a strong selection. Panama to finish bottom of Group G – 1/2 Sky Bet

Journey to the World Cup — Who did Panama beat to qualify?

Panama qualified for their first World Cup in remarkable style

Panama’s qualification will live long in the memory as it really was a remarkable story, although American supporters will disagree. They went into the final set of fixtures level on points with Honduras that meant they would hold onto a play-off place if they matched their result.

In order to qualify automatically they would need to win and hope that USA lost against Trinidad and Tobago who were bottom of the group, with nothing to play for and had lost eight of their nine games. Meanwhile, Panama were playing Costa Rica who had already qualified but were still a strong side. Despite trailing 1-0 in the first-half they were given hope with the news that the US were 2-0 down at the break.

Even though they pulled one back, the United States would lose 2-1 and with Honduras winning as well, Panama knew even a draw would leave them without a play-off place. However, they had equalised early on in the second half but it wasn’t until the 88th minute that they booked their place in Russia thanks to a dramatic goal from Roman Torres that sparked wild celebrations and ensured he would be national icon forever.

They held on and results elsewhere meant they finished third even though they managed just 13 points from their ten games and ended up with a negative goal difference.

Best players for Panama: Who should you be betting on?

Can Roman Torres work his magic again this summer

As you would expect, it’s a real collective effort by Panama with no real stars in the team and a focus on working together. They are very, very physical in their approach and direct in their style of play and it will be fascinating to see how Belgium and England in particular cope with that in the summer.

A lot of their players are physically strong and imposing which will make them a threat of set-pieces and Roman Torres, the man who scored the crucial goal to get them here, is a real danger. He scored two goals in the qualifying campaign even though he is a centre-back. Further up the pitch, Gabriel Torres is probably the main threat and 37-year old Blas Perez is an experienced striker who some fans may recognise after his time in the MLS.

However, goals are going to be really hard to come by for Panama. They lack the quality on the ball to trouble England or Belgium on the counter and it’s hard to envisage that they will have enough territory to really put them under any sustained pressure. That leaves the Tunisia game and whilst they will show more adventure in that, the 3/1 with Bet Victor for Panama not to score a goal seems good value. They managed just nine goals in 10 games in the qualifying so it’s going to be a massive problem for them in Russia. No Panama goalscorer at the World Cup – 3/1 Bet Victor

Who manages Panama?

Hernan Dario Gomez will be expected a unified approach from his team

Hernán Darío Gómez is the Panama manager and has been for the past four years. The Colombian has a wealth of experience at managing national teams having had previous spells in charge of his home country along with Guatemala and Ecuador. He has also been in charge of club sides in Colombia.

Gómez has done a fantastic job with Panama and has the side very well organised and hard to beat. He will need his side to display all those qualities in the summer.

Why bet on Panama?

Will anybody be betting on Panama this summer?

It’s going to be very tough for any punter to find a positive angle to bet on this World Cup 2018 Panama side. They have overachieved in getting to Russia and the way they got there will live long in the memory and the players will always be remembered for doing so.

Given that, they will be under no pressure when they arrive and can set out to frustrate the other sides in the group. Ultimately though, they are seriously up against it because they are several levels below their opposition, especially Belgium and England and the focus will be on keeping the score down. Either way though, it’s a historic occasion for Panama and they will treasure every minute of it even if it’s over after three games.
