Portugal prediction: How well will they do?

Can Portugal repeat their Euro 2016 triumph?

Firstly, you have to say that Portugal had a nightmare when it came to the World Cup draw, which was extremely unfortunate as they were actually in the first pot. Despite that, they managed to pull out Iberian neighbours Spain from pot two – the side everyone wanted to avoid from that section, along with Iran and Morocco. Naturally, the latter two have been given little chance by neutrals because of the quality of the two UEFA representatives however they will both make things tough for their European opponents.

Nevertheless, whilst we don’t expect Spain and Portugal to thrash those sides, we won’t pretend we see it anything other than a Spain – Portugal top two finish. First place is likely to be decided by the game between the pair and we’d back Spain to overcome the Portuguese. Therefore, we are happy to recommend Portugal at 11/10 to finish as runner up in Group B with Sky Bet.

If the group has been unkind to Portugal, they have been fortunate with their pathway to the latter stages of the competition. As they are in Group B, they will play a team from Group A in the last 16 and that happens to be the weakest in the tournament, with Russia, Uruguay, Saudi Arabia and Egypt in there.

Even if Portugal had to play the winners of that group they would fancy their chances in the last 16 so we are backing Portugal to reach the quarter-final stage at odds of 11/8 with Sky Bet. Given the calibre of opposition they are likely to face in the last eight, that may also be a good bet for Portugal’s stage of elimination and they can be had at 9/4 to exit at the quarter-final stage with Bet Victor. Whilst some punters may be tempted by the 25/1 that are on offer for Portugal to win the competition, the reality is they should struggle when the real elite sides are involved.

Portugal to reach the quarter-final – 11/8 Sky Bet
Portugal to be eliminated at the quarter-final stage – 9/4 Bet Victor
Portugal to finish second in Group B – 11/10 Sky Bet

Journey to the World Cup — Who did Portugal beat to qualify?

Portugal overcame tricky opposition from Switzerland in their qualifiers

Portugal needed until the final game of the UEFA group stage to confirm their place as a World Cup 2018 participant, although it doesn’t really tell the whole story. They were given a fairly routine group with Switzerland and Hungary the main challengers, however the consistency of the Swiss presented Portugal with a real problem. Fernando Santos’ men lost the first group game against Basel but then proceeded to win the next eight before the final game of the campaign – against Switzerland.

However, they approached the game in Lisbon with a perfect nine from nine record. Yet, Portugal managed to avenge the 2-0 defeat from earlier in the qualifying with a win of the same score and went through as group winners courtesy of their superior goal difference. That ensured they didn’t have to go through the play-offs, which was a major relief to the nation.

Best players for Portugal: Who should you be betting on?

portugal world cup betting

It’s all about Cristiano Ronaldo at the 2018 World Cup

Portugal’s best player will need no introduction and as mentioned this is the last chance for Ronaldo to win the World Cup which will give him that extra bit of motivation ahead of the tournament. The whole side is set up to get the best out of their talisman who has no defensive responsibilities and can roam around the front to get himself into goalscoring positions.

As well as that, he is the man when it comes to taking the penalties and free-kicks so it is really hard to envisage any player will score more goals than him from the Portugal squad. Obviously though, the bookmakers are aware of this and he is available at just 2/5 to be Portugal’s top scorer which is not going to appeal to a lot of punters.

Ronaldo’s outright top scorer odds of 16/1 may normally appeal but we can’t see Portugal progressing to the latter stages of the competition. Therefore, those odds for potentially five games, one of which is Spain is not very appealing either. As well as that, Iran and Morocco are stubborn opponents in Group B and it’s hard to envisage Portugal racking up big scores in those games. All of this means that we can’t really get on board with Ronaldo this summer unfortunately and you shouldn’t either unless you fancy Portugal to go further than we do.

Who manages Portugal?

Fernando Santos has been pivotal in delivering a formidable Portugal team

Portugal are managed by Fernando Santos who has already guaranteed himself hero status in the country after guiding the national team to the Euro 2016 trophy two years ago. Prior to that he had managed a selection of the biggest clubs in Portugal and Greece as well as the Greek national team in a four year period.

Santos is not the most charismatic of bosses on the sideline and his approach to the game is cautious, however it has worked wonders with this Portugal side. He has built a resolute defence around Pepe who has really been outstanding for the national team in the past few years and he has slowly brought through the exciting, attacking talent that Portugal have to offer to complement Ronaldo. They seem to have a good balance going to Russia and the manager is key to that.

Why bet on Portugal?

portugal world cup betting

Portugal could be a good bet for winning the 2018 World Cup

Portugal will head to Russia with a lot of optimism after their success in France two years ago and when you have Ronaldo leading the line for you up front you must have belief. However, a lot of the key players from Euro 2016 are two years older now which could be telling and they haven’t been given the easiest of groups.

Yet, they should have enough to progress and in knockout football Portugal have shown themselves to be very capable – it brings out the best in the players and the manager who can set them up and organise them well in a one-off game. That’s the reasons to be positive but ultimately they don’t have enough quality, particularly at the back to make it successive tournament wins.
