Uruguay – Group A – Overview and Uruguay betting tips
Uruguay are just one of the many strong South American teams who have a chance of winning the 2018 World Cup. Whilst they haven’t won the tournament since way back in 1930, it seems that Uruguay are keen to make their mark in Russia this summer.
With a squad featuring icons like Luis Suarez, and plenty of talented youngsters, Uruguay look like they will dominate Group A. But does Uruguay have what it takes to go the distance? Read our detailed guide to Uruguay at the 2018 World Cup and find out the best odds for this strong South American side.
Uruguay prediction: How well will they do?
Uruguay have routinely come up with the goods at many past World Cups, as all England fans will remember from their elimination from the 2014 World Cup at the hands of Luis Suarez. And whilst they are never at the top of the bookies’ odds, we think that they will once again do well this summer.
This is especially so as Uruguay have found themselves in the relatively easy Group A where they will take on Saudi Arabia, Egypt, and the host nation, Russia. The first game takes place in Yekatarinburg on 15 June, and it will see Uruguay taking on Egypt. The Egyptian team shouldn’t prove to be too much trouble for a strong Uruguay side, but we have to remember that Uruguay’s slow-moving defence could easily be undone by the incredible striking skills of Egypt’s goal-scorer Mohamed Salah.
As long as Uruguay emerge from their game with Egypt with at least a point, then we think that they will have enough confidence to decimate Saudi Arabia in their next match. This game takes place in Rostov-on-Don on 20 June, and there is little chance that Saudi Arabia will be able to hold their own against a punishing Uruguay side. Saudi Arabia are one of the lowest-ranked teams in the 2018 World Cup, and this could be the match where Luis Suarez once again gets to show why he is one of the all-time greats.
Uruguay’s final match is against the host nation, Russia, in Samara on 25 June. Whilst you must always factor in home advantage when playing against Russia, the Russian team simply lack the strength in depth to take on the formidable talents of Uruguay. Past form suggests that Uruguay should be able to take control of this game to cruise through to the final sixteen as the winners of Group A.
So do Uruguay have what it takes to reach the final? 888Sport have given you odds of 17/20 for Uruguay to top their group, and with further odds of 15/1 for Uruguay to be in the final, it seems like the time could be right to back this promising South American team.

Journey to the World Cup — Who did Uruguay beat to qualify?
Whilst Uruguay managed to qualify from their CONMEBOL qualifiers in second place behind Brazil, they didn’t make it easy for themselves. What began in great style with a 0-2 win against Bolivia, and a 3-0 demolition of Colombia, soon came apart when they were beaten 2-1 by Ecuador.
Things got worse later on where Uruguay suffered three consecutive defeats at the hands of Chile, Brazil and Peru. Thankfully, the team managed to rely on the formidable talents of Luis Suarez and Edinson Cavani to win their final game against Bolivia 4-2 and book their place in Russia this summer.
Recent friendlies have also suggested that all is not well in the Uruguay camp, with an uninspired 0-0 draw with Poland being followed up by an embarrassing 2-1 away defeat by Austria who didn’t even qualify for the World Cup. But with strong performances in the 2018 China Cup that saw them beat Wales and the Czech Republic, it looks like Uruguay could be enjoying a return to form.
Best players for Uruguay: Who should you be betting on?
It’s hard to talk about Uruguay without highlighting the incredible talents of Luis Suarez. Whilst the Barcelona striker has had more than his fair share of controversy, it’s hoped that he can restrain his wayward tendencies and pick up the Golden Boot at the 2018 World Cup. At the moment, you can get odds of 20/1 for Luis Suarez to be the top goalscorer at Titanbet, but there are plenty more stars in the Uruguay team apart from their headline-grabbing forward.
In particular, we have to throw the spotlight on Edinson Cavani. This talented striker has been in rare form for Paris Saint-Germain and was Uruguay’s top goalscorer in qualifying, and we expect that he will be keen to put on a great show in Russia this summer.
In defence, we can expect to see the experienced captain, Diego Godin, holding things together. And whilst there are some questions over Uruguay’s pace at the back, there are plenty of talented youngsters like Federico Valverde who are able to cause real problems for any side in the midfield.

Who manages Uruguay?
It looks like the 2018 World Cup will be the last time that we will see their veteran manager, Oscar Tabarez, in charge. Tabarez has been a massive influence in putting Uruguay back on the global football map, and since he took over in 2006, he has consistently brought the team to the top of their abilities.
Tabarez isn’t just popular for helping Uruguay pick up some great results, as he has developed a positive and attacking style of play that can rip apart the defences of some of the world’s best teams. And with an approach that skilfully uses the talents of young stars like Federico Valverde and Rodrigo Bentacur in the midfield, it’s clear that Tabarez will be much-missed if this is his last appearance as Uruguay’s head coach.
Why bet on Uruguay?
Whilst Uruguay have often been eclipsed by their South American rivals, Brazil and Argentina, it looks like they are in a good place to make the 2018 World Cup one of their best outings in years. Strikers like Luis Suarez and Edinson Cavani are in great form, and whilst there are issues in the defence, the side has a good blend of experienced stars and promising newcomers.
What makes a bet on Uruguay all the more appealing is the fact that they have been given a relatively easy Group A to begin their campaign. We can imagine Uruguay comfortably beating Egypt, Saudi Arabia and Russia to top their group and face the runners up of Group B in the final sixteen.
This means that we could see Uruguay playing against Spain or Portugal in the knock-out rounds, and whilst both of these opponents are very tricky, Uruguay have had a good history of causing an upset in at the World Cup and could make the final stages. So can Uruguay win their first World Cup since 1930? If you think so, then be sure to visit 10Bet where you can get odds of 32/1 for Uruguay to win this legendary football tournament.
