Capuccimix is lightly-raced and chased home a useful sort on his bow over fences two starts back, so appeals most in the 2m beginners chase on Thyestes day at Gowran Park this Thursday (15:35).
Trained by Henry De Bromhead, who is having a fine season in Ireland, this seven-year-old has had just four career starts.
After winning a Clonmel maiden hurdle over 2m 3f on racecourse debut last January, Capuccimix found 3m well beyond him at the same venue.
He was allowed to come home in his own time in a Grade 3 contest there once it was clear he didn’t stay the trip. Those two hurdles outings were all he had before being sent chasing by connections.
A debut over the larger obstacles on reappearance at Navan in November saw him hampered at the seventh fence.
That did not deter Capuccimix, however, as he recovered, then progressed through the field and disputed the lead after two out.
Although beaten seven lengths by Cash Back after failing to find any extra on the run-in, the winner has since bolted up at the same venue in a not novice chase contest.
Why Capuccimix appeals most
That has made him into an Irish and English Arkle contender. If Cash Back lives up to that billing, then Capuccimix can pay him a huge compliment by advertising his form here.
The son of Al Namix made an early exit from a beginners chase at Leopardstown over Christmas when unseating his rider at the first.
He can be forgiven that error, especially as he is still so inexperienced. Capuccimix is now reunited with regular jockey Robbie Power which is a plus.
The form of De Bromhead’s stable remains good with the yard on a 22 per cent strike rate in the last 14 days at the time of writing.
Everything is in place for a big run, so it would be no surprise to see this horse gain compensation here. Capuccimix is 15/8 with Unibet to resume winning ways here.
His main market opponents aren’t bred to be 2m chasers and their pedigrees suggest they want much further. Bearing that in mind, he very much looks the one to be on in this.
