Mall Dini is a maiden over fences and yet to win in 14 starts, though he has finished second three times and third five times in chases.

He stayed on to be the half-a-length runner-up in last season’s Fulke Walwyn Kim Muir Challenge Cup Handicap Chase for amateur riders over 3m 2f at the Cheltenham Festival.

The 2016 Grand National hero Rule The World was also a maiden over fences prior to his Aintree success, as was the 1958 victor Mr What, so as unlikely as it seems, this type of horse cannot be ruled out based on those previous exploits.

Mall Dini’s most recent victory came in the Pertemps Network Final Handicap Hurdle at the 2016 Cheltenham Festival.

His two latest starts have seen him keep on to take sixth in the Thyestes Handicap Chase over 3m 1f at Gowran Park and then finish second in a beginners’ chase at Limerick.

As he hails from a shrewd handler and looks fairly treated at the weights, it would be no surprise to see him go well and sneak into the frame.
