Cori “Coco” Gauff, the rising star of women’s tennis, has made it to the second week of Wimbledon.
This teenage sensation now faces her toughest task to date on court 1 this Monday when she plays Simona Halep.
Gauff battles one of the most consistent players on the WTA Tour. Halep is the seventh seed and a Grand Slam winner.
Outright betting on this tennis tussle has the Romanian a long odds-on favourite for a victory that will end Gauff’s amazing Wimbledon run.
The American, just 15 years old, has ruffled feathers in SW19 this year, however, becoming the youngest ever Open Era qualifier.
Gauff is in the main draw entirely on merit and knocked out five-time Wimbledon women’s singles champ Venus Williams in straight sets.
Not fazed by battling her idol, Gauff then beat former semi-finalist Magdalena Rybarikova. She also showed real character in eliminating Polona Hercog.
Gauff wins a set worth a wager
In that third round fixture, Gauff lost the first set and saved two match points. She is perhaps written off too lightly by bookmakers here.
Odds of 15/4 with 888Sport for Gauff pulling off another shock are tempting because Halep hasn’t been flawless at Wimbledon this year.
Fellow Romanian player Mihaela Buzarnescu took her to a decider. Halep is still respected here, because she’s reached at least the quarter-finals in three of the last five years.
Given her opponent’s exploits, Gauff wins a set odds of 13/10 with BetVictor look a safer bet. The youngster is more than capable of this, if reproducing her form from earlier rounds.
Most of the other Wimbledon ladies’ singles last 16 matches look one-sided. Bolder punters opposing Halep entirely can cover themselves here as well.
Whatever the final outcome, Gauff has all the tools and temperament for giving a great account of herself.
Bet of the Day: 13/10 with BetVictor, Gauff wins a set v Halep in Wimbledon ladies’ singles last 16.
