Few people would argue with the fact that it looks like a two-horse race between Manchester City and Liverpool to pick up the Premier League title this season. But when it comes to predicting the Premier League top goalscorer for 2019/20, things are looking much more wide open.
Alongside goalscoring heavyweights like Harry Kane, Mo Salah and Sergio Aguero, there are a few new signings like Everton’s Moise Kean and Arsenal’s Nicolas Pepe who could really shake things up. Plus with players like Raheem Sterling looking better than ever, it could be set for a fantastic season for goalscoring in the Premier League 2019/20. So here’s a quick rundown of the players who are in line to win this year’s Golden Boot.
Harry Kane
Everybody knows that Harry Kane is one of England’s most gifted goal-scorers. The Tottenham striker suffered numerous injuries last season including a nasty ankle ailment that took him out of much of the second half of the season. Despite this, Kane still managed to score 17 goals in 28 Premier League appearances, as well as a further seven in other competitions.
Harry Kane’s chances of getting the Golden Boot award in 2019/20 have been given a significant boost thanks to the arrival of Lyon’s Tanguy Ndombele in the midfield. This talented young star could give Tottenham plenty of extra firepower, and Mauricio Pochettino’s team will also be thankful that they have kept Christian Eriksen on their books.
Plus with Kane showing strong form in Tottenham’s pre-season games with an incredible goal from the half-way line against Juventus, it seems as though the 26-year old star could be well on his way to picking up his third Premier League Golden Boot award.
Mo Salah
Anybody who saw the Community Shield match between Liverpool and Manchester City will know how hungry for goals Mo Salah looks at the moment. The 27-year old striker managed to score 22 Premier League goals in 38 appearances last season, along with five more in other tournaments.
Such a goalscoring record pales in comparison to the 32 goals Salah scored in Liverpool’s 2017/18 campaign. But there’s every indication that the Egyptian forward could once again deliver the goods this season. With talented players like Roberto Firmino and Sadio Mane providing plenty of support, Salah is once again expected to be in line for the Golden Boot in 2019/20.
Whilst Salah’s Africa Cup of Nations exploits may have threatened to fatigue the Liverpool star, he looks very lively in the Community Shield. Plus with the likes of Xherdan Shaqiri and Naby Keita showing plenty of creativity, Salah could be on course for another Premier League Golden Boot.
Sergio Aguero
Although there is still plenty of speculation about whether Leroy Sane will leave the Etihad to join Bayern Munich, as long as Sergio Aguero is in the team, then Manchester City won’t have to worry too much about getting lots of goals.
The Argentine striker scored the joint highest amount of Premier League goals last season alongside Mo Salah and Pierre Emerick Aubameyang. His 22 Premier League goals in 33 appearances was joined by 10 more strikes in other competitions, and he has already become Manchester City’s all-time highest goalscorer.
Pep Guardiola’s team are looking virtually unbeatable this season, and with the addition of the Atletico Madrid star Rodri in midfield, it seems that Aguero could once again cause his opponents plenty of problems in the Premier League.
Pierre Emerick Aubameyang
Arsenal may have had a fairly flat season in 2018/19, but Pierre Emerick Aubameyang was on great goalscoring form. The Gabonese striker picked up 22 goals in 36 Premier League appearances which earned him a joint Golden Boot award alongside Salah and Aguero.
Aubameyang has already hit the back of the net in Arsenal’s pre-season campaign with a well-earned goal against the formidable likes of Barcelona. The 30-year old forward proved to work wonderfully well alongside the likes of Alexandre Lacazette and the pair picked up 40 goals between them last season.
This season sees Unai Emery’s squad benefitting from the addition of Lille’s Nicolas Pepe on the wing. Plus with Dani Ceballos joining the club on loan from Real Madrid, there’s hope that Arsenal might move on from the Mesut Ozil saga and get back to their best.
Raheem Sterling
Although Sergio Aguero was the focal point of Manchester City’s attack last season, there’s every indication that Raheem Sterling could give him plenty of competition for being the club’s top goalscorer this season.
The 24-year star is finally starting to live up to his true potential, as was shown in his Community Shield goal and his fine run of form during England’s Euro 2020 qualifiers. Sterling scored 17 goals in 34 Premier League appearances last season, and struck another eight in other competitions.
If Sane leaves Manchester City to join Bayern Munich, it could give Sterling plenty more room to show his true goalscoring potential. Plus with the likes of Kevin De Bruyne on hand to create something out of nothing in the midfield, we think that this could be a very big season for Raheem Sterling.
Other quality goalscorers to keep an eye on
There’s no shortage of excellent forwards in this season’s Premier League. Alongside the likes of Gabriel Jesus, Son Heung-min and Dwight Gayle, these are some more of the likely candidates for getting plenty of goals in the upcoming season.
Marcus Rashford
Manchester United suffered a very disappointing season in 2018/19, but hopes are high that they might put the Mourinho era behind them and find their way back to glory. Whilst there’s plenty of doubts about the futures of high-profile Manchester United stars such as Paul Pogba and Romelu Lukaku, the Old Trafford faithful should be able to rely on Marcus Rashford to score goals.
The 21-year old forward has been in great form in the Manchester United preseason friendlies, and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s decision to put Rashford on the left wing looks to have been a wise move.
Jamie Vardy
Although Leicester City will certainly miss Harry Maguire after his big-money move to Manchester United, they can find some consolation in the fact that Jamie Vardy is showing no signs of slowing down.
Vardy was in very sharp form in the Foxes’ preseason match against Atalanta, and he still has plenty of pace. It’s going to be fascinating to see how the 32-year old striker performs under Brendan Rogers. But whether he can improve on last season’s Premier League goal tally of 18 goals remains to be seen.
Olivier Giroud
Chelsea will definitely be missing Eden Hazard since the Belgian left to join Real Madrid earlier this summer. Hazard was Chelsea’s top goalscorer last season, but his absence should mean that Olivier Giroud can finally get to show Stamford Bridge his true worth.
There is no denying the talents of Giroud, but the French forward has suffered from a real lack of consistency in the Premier League. However, with the arrival of Frank Lampard as the new Chelsea manager, it’s hoped that Giroud might be able to find his goalscoring touch. Much rests on whether Lampard can deliver the goods or become the next Premier League manager to get the axe.
Sebastien Haller
Although West Ham are unlikely to trouble the top of the Premier League table, their signing of Sebastien Haller from Eintracht Frankfurt for a club record £45 million could be a real coup.
The 25-year old striker has similarities with Liverpool’s Roberto Firmino, and his 14 goals for Eintracht Frankfurt in last year’s Bundesliga shows that he can find the back of the net. But whether Haller will get enough support from his West Ham teammates remains to be seen.
Moise Kean
Everton’s new signing, Moise Kean, is another great new player who’s expected to light up this season’s Premier League. The 19-year old striker came to Goodison Park for an initial fee of £25 million from Juventus, and whilst it’s still early in the youngster’s playing career, there’s every sign that this could be one of the bargains of the summer.
Kean earned plenty of acclaim with Juventus thanks to his speed and strength, and with six goals in 13 appearances in Serie A football last year, it shows that he can perform at the highest level. Plus with the highly rated Jean-Philippe Gbamin boosting the Everton ranks in the midfield, it seems that Everton could serve up plenty of surprises in 2019/20.
Callum Wilson
Callum Wilson scored an impressive 14 goals in 30 Premier League games for Bournemouth last season. The 27-year old striker might not have the support offered to other forwards in the Premier League, but he has a proven record of being able to score when it counts.
Whilst Bournemouth’s leaky defence may have let the side down, there was no denying the attacking partnership of Wilson and Joshua King. The pair helped Bournemouth score 56 goals last season which was the highest amount outside of the top six. Although Wilson has suffered more than his fair share of injuries, there’s hope that 2019/20 could be another strong season for this talented striker.
