The OpenOdds guide to betting in running on horses
Last updated & tested: 2019-05-26
Horse racing is the beautiful sport of Kings, and betting on horse racing has been a favourite with the best online bookmakers for years. Our guide to the best horse racing bookmakers will give you all the details you need to find the best bookie for you. But as online bookmakers look to offer punters more, betting in running on horses has become a popular new type of bet. With this bet, you’re part of a betting exchange with the chance to make live in-play bets on running horse races.
It’s a great new way to make money on this old favourite. Instead of placing pre-race bets and sitting back powerless to do anything but wait, with in play trading horse racing you can make your bets all the way to the post. It’s a fantastic addition to your horse racing betting strategy.
What you must know about betting in running on horses
There are so many online bookmakers out there offering great opportunities for your horse racing betting. Here in the OpenOdds guide to the best horse racing betting we’ll look at exactly what’s on offer and who the best bookmakers are for your bets, including a few pointers and free betting tips. We’ll look at the best bookmakers for odds, for their bonus offers, money back free bet promotions and much more. We’ll also be looking at the option of betting in running on horses, where you the punter are part of a betting exchange taking bets on horses as they’re racing. Who you choose will depend on a variety of factors, and we’ll cover that next.
How to find the best bookmakers for horse racing
The best bookmaker for horse racing for you depends on what you are after. But there are definitely certain things you need to be aware of. First of all, and most importantly, we’re never going to steer you wrong at OpenOdds when it comes to matters of security, reliability, customer service. After that, the next most important factor is to look at the odds. Here at Open Odds we’re all about making things easier for you, which is why we’d always recommend checking out our Open Odds betting odds comparison site.
Bookies set the odds usually, but with in running trading horse racing, it’s the punters that help set these odds. If a bookmaker offers odds of 5/1 (or 5 to 1), it means that for every £1 stake you’ll receive £6 back in total if the horse comes first (£5 winning profit plus £1 stake).
Another reason for choosing an online bookmaker is to get their bonus offers and promotions. These can be in the form of new player deposit bonuses, free bet offers, or perhaps insurance offers in case your bet loses or your horse is a non-runner.
How it works: What are you looking for in your horse racing bookmaker?
First, pick a great bookmaker with the best odds. As we’ve already told you, that can make a huge difference to your winnings. But you also need to know what sort of bet to make. The win bet is simplest; pick your horse, put a win bet of £1 on at odds of 5/1 and when that horse romps home you’ve just won £5 (plus your £1 stake back). An each-way bet is for your horse to either win or come in one of the top positions, usually 2nd or 3rd. When putting an each-way bet on you double your stake, so a £1 each-way on your horse costs £2 (£1 to win, £1 to place). And the money you get back depends on where your horse finishes.
For more complicated bets there’s plenty of options. But two of our favourites are the Tricast and Accumulator. With a Tricast, you try to forecast the top three in the right order. Much harder to do of course, but the rewards can be much bigger. Accumulator bets are multiple bets on different horses across multiple races. The accumulator can be anything from two races to as many as you want, but to pay out, every selection needs to win. If you pick four winning horses in four races, all at odds of 2/1 and put £1 stake on this 4-fold accumulator, you get a massive £80 in profit. But remember, if just one of them loses, your whole accumulator loses.

Betting in running on horses – something new and exciting!
This new way of betting is something that’s becoming more popular in the modern, always available world of online betting. Right now, the only bookie we can really recommend for betting in running on horses is Betfair. When you’re thinking about your Betfair horse racing in play strategy it’s essential you understand what you are betting on and how. You need to be betting at the Betfair exchange rather than the normal betting slip. Once the race starts, you can start betting. Running horses are backed by you and all other players. You can back horses to win but also have the option of laying horses in running (backing to not win). The important thing is to understand you are betting against other players trading running horses and not the bookmaker. Because of this, the odds can change really fast with all the runners trading during the race duration. So it’s something we’d recommend for experienced players and always look for the longer duration races when considering your inplay horse racing strategy.
